Publisher's Summary

The Rand scientific expedition entered the lush wilderness of the Amazon and never returned. Years later, one of its members has stumbled out of the world's most inhospitable rainforest - a former Special Forces soldier, scarred, mutilated, terrified, and mere hours from death, who went in with one arm missing...and came out with both intact.

Unable to comprehend this inexplicable event, the government sends Nathan Rand into this impenetrable secret world of undreamed-of perils, to follow the trail of his vanished father...toward mysteries that must be solved at any cost.

But the nightmare that is awaiting Nate and his team of scientists and seasoned U.S. Rangers dwarfs any danger they anticipated - an ancient, unspoken terror, a power beyond human imagining - that can forever alter the world.

Brain candy

A fun adventure albeit derivative of other “rainforest fantasy adventure” stories. The audio was not edited well; often disjointed and lost flow.

Fun!

A soldier with one arm walks into the Amazon jungle with his troop. Four years later, he exits, alone, with two intact arms. A group of scientists race to find the answer to this medical mystery. Along the way they encounter:
Amazon natives.
A pet jaguar.
A professional enemy.
An arch enemy.
A shaman who wears the shrunken head of her ex-husband as a pendant around her neck.
Frogs. Piranhas. Frog-piranhas.
A romantic interest.
.... and so much more in this wild jungle adventure.
Not sure how I never heard of this author before, but I can't wait to read/hear more of his work!
The narration was perfect for this kind of story. If you love Indiana Jones kind of adventure, you'll love this. Highly recommended!

A chilling story with satisfying ending.

I had read this as a teenager, this book still is incredible, John's voice brought to life the story as it gripped my soul with a nostalgic feel. James always researches so well his books, a feat most authors in this era cannot claim as Google is their friend. James always provides insight into topics, and in this book he inspired me as a teen to study what plants could do for humans.

An interesting trek in the forest.

I've loved this book for quite a while now, it's nice to have the audiobook to go with it.

The narrator didn't blow me away but it wasn't a bad perfomance either.

As for the story is similiar to the first 'Uncharted' video game in pace.
Pretty grounded at first and introducing more fictional material towards the end, if I can say as much without giving anything away.

All-in-all a fascinating romp in one of the more unexplored regions of earth.
