Publisher's Summary

Number-one New York Times best-seller Charlaine Harris (Sookie Stackhouse mysteries, True Blood, Midnight Crossroad) delivers the first thriller in a new trilogy that presents a chilling alternate history of the US where everyone believes in magic - but no one is sure whether they can trust it.

After the assassination of FDR in the 1930s, the US collapses and is picked off by the UK, Canada, Mexico, and Russia. We find ourselves in the Southwestern states, now known as Texoma. It is here that the gunnie Lizbeth Rose tries to piece out a life, running security on runs from Texoma across the border to Mexico, where work and prospects are stronger.

When two Russian magicians come looking for a man named Alex Karkarov, they hire Lizbeth to find him or his family, but there are problems: The man they're looking for is dead, but he has a daughter they now need to find, as an ever-growing set of sorcerers and gunnies do not want them to succeed. It's a good thing Lizbeth is a deadly gunfighter; too bad she hates sorcerers, even the ones on whom she has to learn to rely.

Number-one New York Times best-seller Charlaine Harris (Sookie Stackhouse mysteries, True Blood, Midnight Crossroad) returns to fantasy in a taut thriller set in a US where magic is an acknowledged truth, but disreputable.

Interesting and worth checking out

Really interesting world building in society and characters. It’s different from my usual books; including all of Harris’ books that I’ve read. It does have the feel of a western to me; with a taste of dystopia.
I wasn’t sure about Kaminsky’s narration at the start, but it became clear that her style and voice fit Gunny Rose and her world.

cowboy and magic

The story style is a bit different, but works. Fast pace killing but not gory. Rough and tough setting but kept my attention all the way to a weird end.

Meh

meh. It was okay and I'd try another just to see how the next one goes. I generally like her books but this wasn't anything to write home about. Her characters are usually better. This one didn't do much for me. Also the narrator was just okay.

An engaging Western tale with a female protagonist

The protagonist of the story is neither sinner nor saint, but is guided by a higher moral code. leave it to Charlaine Harris to create a female character who is both admirable and questionable. Loved it!

An Easy Death was an Easy Read

I like strong women characters, love stories, westerns, magic, and intrigue. . . .An Easy Death had all the ingrediants you want in good story! Lizbeth Rose is the perfect heroine for today's independent women. She is sensible, logical, no nonsense, shrewd and she can hold her own in a gun fight! i totally recommend this book if you are looking for an entertaining read.

A Divided Country

Charlaine Harris always creates memorable characters, and this new series is no exception. This is an alternative world where FDR was assassinated, but also where magic is real and wielded by some as well as despised by the ones who don't have it. I look forward to exploring the divided country in future books.

Gunnie Rose is my new hero!

I loved the beginning of this new series! The only downside is having to wait for the next book. The narrator is very talented and the story is entertaining. I’m ready for Gunnie Rose’s next adventure!
