À propos de cet audio
A magnificently reported and soulfully crafted exploration of the human immune system - the key to health and wellness, life and death. An epic, first-of-its-kind audiobook, entwining leading-edge scientific discovery with the intimate stories of four individual lives, by the Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times journalist.
“An Elegant Defense by Matt Richtel is one of those rare nonfiction books that transcends the genre. On one level it is a fascinating and engrossing account of the latest, and quite astonishing, discoveries involving the human immune system and how it works. But it is also a story about people facing mortality, about the passion of scientists searching for truth, and a meditation on death and how all of us struggle with the ultimate mystery. Heartfelt and moving, full of compassion, love, and the human drama, this is the work of a writer of high ethical character who is grappling with big issues and deep humanistic problems. What an inspiring and wonderful read. I highly recommend this extraordinary book.” (Douglas Preston, number-one best-selling author of The Lost City of the Monkey God)

In Remember, neuroscientist and acclaimed novelist Lisa Genova delves into how memories are made and how we retrieve them. You'll learn whether forgotten memories are temporarily inaccessible or erased forever and why some memories are built to exist for only a few seconds (like a passcode) while others can last a lifetime (your wedding day). You'll come to appreciate the clear distinction between normal forgetting (where you parked your car) and forgetting due to Alzheimer's (that you own a car).

Sean Carroll, theoretical physicist and one of this world’s most celebrated writers on science, rewrites the history of 20th-century physics. Already hailed as a masterpiece, Something Deeply Hidden shows for the first time that facing up to the essential puzzle of quantum mechanics utterly transforms how we think about space and time. His reconciling of quantum mechanics with Einstein’s theory of relativity changes, well, everything. Most physicists haven’t even recognized the uncomfortable truth: Physics has been in crisis since 1927.

A most Beautiful not just Elegant Book
Matt did an amazing job writing this beautiful book and Fred Sanders a speechless one in narrating it.
A very complicated subject was researched so very well. I have been on this search myself for over thirty years as just an interested person.
Thank you to the author, the narrator, the publisher and Audible.

What's the point?
I picked this book to learn about "The Extraordinary New Science of the Immune System," and I can't say I learned anything about that. I have come back to it multiple times, thinking that maybe I am missing something, but ultimately it seems that the book that is lacking. For example, the chapter on T cells discusses in detail the life of the man who discovered them but doesn't explain what they do, why, and what can go wrong. The life story may be interesting but it doesn't help me understand the immune system which is what this book purports to be about.
It seems the author wanted to write a book about his friend and used his immune research as an excuse. The other narratives are severely underdeveloped, with the 2 female patients comprising 1 section. The science was lacking and the history would only be relevant if there was a foundation for it, which there was not.
