Publisher's Summary

Tending to the soldiers in the trenches of France during the First World War, battlefield nurse Bess Crawford can't help but notice the photo of a young pilot's wife every time she tends to him. But then at the railway station, in a mob of troops leaving for the front, Bess glimpses a familiar face--the pilot's wife, with another man. Later, back in France, Bess sees a newspaper with a drawing of the woman's face on the front page. She'd been murdered--the very day Bess saw her. Bess is soon on the search for a devious and very dangerous killer - a search that will put her own life in jeopardy.

Book 2 soon to be followed by Book 3...

This second book of the series is just as good as the first. We discover more about the character of the heroine, and we are gradually drawn into her world... Storyline and narration are excellent.

A bit over written. Otherwise good.

I found a lot of mundane description. And the plot moved more slowly in places than I would have wished. The writing did bring me a sense of the devastation and uselessness of the great war.

Meh

The story was somewhat farfetched. It is difficult to believe that the main character, a nurse in WW1, would get the abundant leaves she does to solve a crime Scotland Yard can't, not to mention travel around England as she does. Won't be bothering with any more 'Bess Crawford' mysteries.
