Publisher's Summary

A princess is missing and a peace treaty is on the verge of collapse in this new Veronica Speedwell adventure from the New York Times best-selling and Edgar Award-nominated author Deanna Raybourn.

January 1889. As the newest member of the Curiosity Club - an elite society of brilliant, intrepid women - Veronica Speedwell is excited to put her many skills to good use. As she assembles a memorial exhibition for pioneering mountain climber Alice Baker-Greene, Veronica discovers evidence that the recent death was not a tragic climbing accident but murder. Veronica and her natural historian beau, Stoker, tell the patron of the exhibit, Princess Gisela of Alpenwald, of their findings. With Europe on the verge of war, Gisela's chancellor, Count von Rechstein, does not want to make waves - and before Veronica and Stoker can figure out their next move, the princess disappears.

Having noted Veronica's resemblance to the princess, von Rechstein begs her to pose as Gisela for the sake of the peace treaty that brought the princess to England. Veronica reluctantly agrees to the scheme. She and Stoker must work together to keep the treaty intact while navigating unwelcome advances, assassination attempts, and Veronica's own family - the royalty who has never claimed her.

Highly recommend this series

Whenever I'm at a loss for what to listen to next, I get the next Veronica Speedwell adventure. I am never disappointed.. Especially enjoyable is having to google items that are referred to in the series. I've been both entertained and educated, thanks to Ms. Raybourn!

Love it!

I have really enjoyed the Veronica Speedwell series. I love her writing and how she writes the characters' interactions. The stories are engaging and fun. An Unexpected Peril was a book I devoured. Also, I love how Angèle Masters brings Deanna Raybourn's characters to life. I hope to see more books in this series!

speed up narration

I found that at a speed of 1.15x the voice of Stoker is more bearable. I love this series, and the banter between the main characters is delightful.

They keep getting better...

Yet another exciting adventure for Veronica and Stoker. The author does such a masterful job of keeping multiple mysteries in play, and at the same time interweaving Veronica’s own story into the narrative. Ms. Raybourn also accomplished this in the previous book, remembering that her readers are invested not only in the storyline but also in the lives her protagonists. While the writing is amazing, Angele Master is what really brings the characters to life. I’ve never heard a voice actor so such a wonderful job bringing characters to life. Her narration keeps me choosing the audio book instead of the written word.
I highly recommend this book.

Maybe it’s the narrator but...

I’ve listen to all of the previous books and, while the stories have been interesting enough, the snotty arrogant shrilly heroine and the rough grunting hero finally became unbearable. This time I couldn’t make it through.

Great read, very bad listen

The story was fun and well written as expected from Deanna Rayburn. The narration of Stoker’s voice and especially the German men was so annoying that I was unable to finish the book. Change narrator please!

A Triumph

An Unexpected Peril is the sixth book in Deanna Raybourn's extraordinary Veronica Speedwell Mysteries. Veronica is an unique character, bold, intelligent, and utterly cutting edge for her time. I find her and her devoted lover, Revelstoke Templeton Vane, Stoker to his friends, to be a most compelling couple. This mystery has them searching for clues to the murderer of an Alpine climber, a young woman whom Veronica knew and admired. In the course of solving this case, Veronica is pressed into the service of the royal princess of a tiny country on the border of France and Germany.
Told in the first person with humor and insight, the narration is enhanced by the fantastic talents of Angele Masters.

13 hours!? A mystery?

I like the Speedwell mysteries, Stoker is my favorite character. This book however was just to dang long with unnecessary add-ins. Everything, and I mean everything was described in detail. I don't mind it ever now and then, but everything? Each room they walked in, each thing they ate, each piece of clothing, each person they came in contact with, even each mustache. Out of the 13 hours I'd say 4hrs (and that's being generous) was about the actual mystery. Once you find out who did it, it was still an hour to go. I will see how long the next book is before I buy it, which is a shame because I like the duo.

Not my Favorite

I have come to love this series. We get to see the witty and cunning of Veronica with her able partner Stoker. In this book though I found it dragged a lot. The descriptions were so over the top I just wanted them to stop. The case itself wasn't all that interesting and it more focused on a whole royal affair than the case. So overall I was disappointed with this book but I am hoping for the next one to be better.
