Publisher's Summary

The battle for Urdesh has begun - and the outcome will determine the fate of the Sabbat Worlds Crusade. Ibram Gaunt, now right hand to the Warmaster, and his Ghosts hold the key to victory - but can they defeat the sinister Anarch and his Sons of Sek?

Listen to it because:

It's all been leading to this. The Victory arc concludes with an epic story that weaves together plot threads from throughout the entire Gaunt's Ghosts series and puts the beloved characters in more danger than you'll be able to bear. Fair warning: they're not all going to get out alive.

The story:

Men of Tanith...do you want to live forever?

On the forge world of Urdesh, the massed forces of the Imperial Crusade engage in a final bloody battle with the Archenemy commander known as the Anarch and his elite warriors - the barbaric Sons of Sek. A victory for either side will decide more than just the fate of Urdesh...it will determine the outcome of the entire Sabbat Worlds Crusade. Ibram Gaunt - now serving at the right hand of Warmaster Macaroth - finds himself at the very heart of the struggle. His regiment, the Tanith First “Ghosts”, holds the vital key to ultimate success. But as the forces of the Imperium and Chaos square up for the final, large-scale confrontation, Gaunt discovers that the greatest threat of all may come from inside rather than out.

Dan Abnett delivers

Great story, Abnett is the best 40K author for sure, Toby Longworth is the best narrator. I hope there are more Gaunt’s Ghosts books.

Pretty much as good as these things get.

Warhammer 40K novels are always inherently ridiculous but Abnett manages an eclectic cast of characters that run from compelling to detestable to fun and back to ridiculous in the best ways. The action runs parallel to the characters and is visceral and fun. Longworth's performance draws the listener in and keeps characters clearly delineated with accents, cadence and voices.

This is, more than most other books in the series, a very direct sequel to it's two immediate predecessors and may be harder to get into than some but if you're up to date or just enjoy this kind of story it is still worth the effort.

A great novel with a bad twist (spoilers)

i really enjoyed the book, the voice acting it top tier as always. it was lovely to see this adventure lead to the last steps for the Sabat war. the plot with the Sek elite units was enjoyable but the novel as a whole was ruined by the twist with the children of Tona and Gol. it didn't feel well planned and was too sudden. a plot twist like that is hard to pull off but it's even worse when there is nowhere near enough clues to the twist. at the very least half of the twist felt like it just truly made no sense

Worth a listen

Action-packed and sadness-packed. This is possibly the most pivotal story of the series since Necropolis.

A fantastic soft ending while we wait for the next book

A fantastic story with a twist that punches you in the gut and makes you notice the small things thinking back on the series. One of my favourites in the series.

if there is a book 16, it better be depressing

story as stand alone is fine. story as connected to the test if the series is very disapointing. if there is another book, it better be heartbreaking, because by far, this is the worst trauma the ghosts suffer, and it doesn't seem like it actually affects them.
