Publisher's Summary

The free-spirited Anne Shirley has a beautiful way of looking at the world and touching our hearts. In this, the third volume of the Anne of Green Gables series, the irrepressible Anne dreams of the woman she hopes to be when she decides to leave Green Gables and her beloved Prince Edward Island for college. She is eager for new adventure. But now she faces difficult choices involving her secret aspirations to be a writer and her hopes of finding the right person to marry. Homesickness and a grumpy old math professor cause Anne to doubt she should be a Redmond College coed, even though her old friends Gilbert Blythe and Priscilla Grant are there to share the challenges and surprises. And when Anne is the recipient of unexpected marriage proposals from the most unlikely men, she may shock friends and Islanders alike with her decision.

Good story but beware of graphic animal abuse descriptions

This book is a nice slice of life tale in an interesting time period. If children are listening, please make sure an adult is handy to describe the troubling passages of animal abuse contained within. There's a part where the author describes in horrifying detail how to kill a cat with chloroform, with one of the teenage characters attesting that she has murdered multiple cats in this matter. This is troubling because there is absolutely no oversight from higher authority and the teenage characters are able to buy the chloroform (!) from a chemist/drug store for this purpose with NO oversight. Kids need to know that this isn't accepted in modern society anymore, and that Anne's era was very different from our own, thst animal cruelty was unfortunately commonplace back then but that it is no longer acceptable now. Also, there's mention of a farmer randomly deciding to hang his dog to death; when the poor thing escapes and tries to run for its life it is again hung, this time until death. Again, a parent or responsible adult needs to explain this troubling passage to any kids listening and enforce why this counts in our modern times as animal cruelty, therefore ethically and culturally completely unacceptable now.

Phil stole the spotlight

Anne sounds a bit coquettish in this reading. And I didn't appreciate how boring Anne's character became after the first book. However, Susan O'Malley's performance was nonetheless very skillful! And the book was still interesting. Particularly, thanks to Philippa Gordon, who stole the spotlight from Anne.

Love this series so much

It’s so nice that it’s about Canada and I’m enjoying it tremendously. There’s no way I would be able to read all these books I love audible.
