Publisher's Summary

Audible narration by Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld)

On the eve of Earth’s destruction, a young scientist discovers something too precious to lose, in a story of cataclysm and hope by the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Divergent trilogy.

It’s only two weeks before an asteroid turns home to dust. Though most of Earth has already been evacuated, it’s Samantha’s job to catalog plant samples for the survivors’ unknowable journey beyond. Preparing to stay behind and watch the world end, she makes a final human connection.

As certain doom hurtles nearer, the unexpected and beautiful potential for the future begins to flower.

Veronica Roth’s Ark is part of Forward, a collection of six stories of the near and far future from out-of-this-world authors. Each piece can be read or listened to in a single thought-provoking sitting.

What the critics say

"Narrator Evan Rachel Wood portrays Samantha in a soft, resigned tone that fits a story in which humanity has already been through the painful grieving process and has settled into a somber acceptance of its fate...it’s the gentle emphasis Wood gives to the connections between humans that makes this audiobook such a compelling listen." --AudioFile magazine

"…A sensational project...." --Spine Magazine

“This is exactly how I like my techno-anxiety.... Happy bingeing!” --Audible, an October Editors Pick

OMG let me save you an hour of your life

this is not a spoiler because this story is horrible.

it's the end of the world and humanity has evacuated to another planet at the last minute someone discovers a new flower the end.

how does garbage like this get curated? is it the idea of curating to select good stories for a collection? dammit?

Couldn’t Finish

Slow and boring! The narrator’s voice was so slow it could have put me to sleep. With 20 minutes left, I was so irritated I just abandoned it. I don’t know how it ends, and I really don’t care! Hoping the others in this series are better than this one.....😴😑

boring

Unfortunately it was a snore fest.
However if you'd like a nap I recommend this.

Maybe it's just me!

I struggled to finish. Kept falling asleep. The reader's attempt to add accents made it very confusing to follow at times.

Poignant Piece

This piece was well thought from start to finish. The performance was not to my liking, however, it was a bit too slow and plodding. While I found some of the analogies a bit elementary, the overall body of the story was exquisite. I found the characters more and more intriguing as the work progressed, and in the end, I really felt for them and felt like I understood them. I would definitely recommend this one to a friend.

Interesting short story of the world’s end

I enjoyed the character development and the divergence from normal expected outcomes. The performance was good, though I am unsure if it was performance or editing that was an issue. There were many pauses between dialogue that didn’t sound natural. Possibly due to vocal artist recording in one sentence at a time and editor piecing together, or just a style choice by actor. But, this broke up the story in a way that was distracting to me.

The story concept wasn’t new, but the point of view of the protagonist seemed to be and the message learned was good.

It’s a short listen and enjoyable enough that I’d recommend to someone that likes world end type of stories.

Though provoking storyline

As a "scientist" myself of the Adrian variety, I felt a kinship of sorts. Ninety minutes was just long enough to get me hooked on Roth and Couch!!
Narration was acceptable, but as a woman, I have always preferred the voice of a man.
Best part was the orchid drama. [smile]

just couldn't get into it

Overall I have liked the collection this is from but Ark just never engaged me. I finished it only because it was short otherwise I would have stopped listening.

Could Have Been Better

I felt that the story although intriguing fell a little flat. It's Veronica Roth so when I went to listen to this I was expecting something close the intense action that I got when reading the Divergent series. I found the story all rather boring. Even Rachel Wood did great though, good delivery of the various characters. I liked the performance, not so much the story.

well written and well-read

... more like a reassuring apocalyptic fantasy then anything that might really occur at the end of the world. enjoyable, lovely to listen to.
