Publisher's Summary

"Of all the people who have affected my life and influence the choices I've made, none has been more important than my father."

So begins the autobiography of legendary boxing trainer and commentator Teddy Atlas, who grew from the rebellious son of a doctor to a man who embraces, and lives by, his father's values and code.

In this gritty, spellbinding tale, Atlas recounts his fascinating life as a juvenile delinquent on the streets of Staten Island; as a boxer and Golden Gloves champion under the tutelage of famed trainer Cus D'Amato; as a companion to the dangerous, unpredictable Sammy "the Bull" Gravano, up until the day Gravano turned rat and brought down crime boss John Gotti; and as a trainer of champions and contenders, among them 14-year-old Mike Tyson and heavyweight Michael Moorer, whom he led to the crown with a win over Evander Holyfield.

Equally engrossing are Teddy Atlas's accounts of training Twyla Tharp, dancer and choreographer, for her successful comeback at the age of 42; his work with actor Willem Dafoe, preparing him for his role as a concentration camp boxer in the film Triumph of the Spirit; his journey to Poland to choreograph the film's boxing scenes; and his own performance in movies such as Play It to the Bone

In sharing his stories, Atlas reveals the philosophy by which he lives. Like Teddy Atlas - inimitable, tough, honest, and wise - this book inspires. It is about so much more than boxing. It is a story of overcoming hardships, of compassion for those in need, of tremendous personal integrity, and of personal and professional triumph.

Phenomenal

This book sat in my library for at least six months. I didn’t think the reviews were right. There’s no way a book about boxing by Teddy Atlas, who I love but I thought had a very narrow fan base could be that good. It is and I was wrong about Teddy. Throw out all those bs self-help books and listen to this one. The interspersed interviews really add something to the book and makes me wish all memoirs had this. Teddy isn’t going to be a professional audible narrator anytime soon but there’s an authenticity to his words and the way he says them. It really is an amazing story and Teddy is incredible. Get this book and listen to it right away. It’s one of the best I’ve ever heard, no hyperbole.

Teddy's Story Had Me Hooked!

I will remember this book forever. I didn't realize the book was over when it came it was so easy to listen to while at work. Some people cracked jokes at work but this book don't play. Their mocking of listening to a book at a construction site quickly turned into us enjoying a nice story. Especially when they realized it was Teddy Atlas speaking.

Amazing Book, even if you're not into Boxing

The book was amazing, start to finish. Some parts had me laughing, others had me choked up. It's honest, raw. Full of valuable life lessons, although it's not written like "Valuable Lesson #1", thankfully. You will find parallels with your own life, probably. It's hard to walk away from this book not having a great deal of respect for Teddy Atlas. I could go on, but just get the book. Every chapter ended with me thinking, "Damn, this is such a good book." With Teddy, himself, reading, you pick up on subtle emotional que's as he's remembering the moment as he is reading it. One of the best books I've read. You will most likely love it, too.

Hard to keep up with

I hate that I didn't like this book. I love the whole thing with Mike tyson and his trainers. But this book was just so boring I had to press the stop button at chapter 4.

Phenomenally Written

It’s nice to hear the author themselves narrate their own books. This was an incredible story of one of the boxing greats.
