From award-winning author R. F. Kuang comes Babel, a thematic response to The Secret History and a tonal retort to Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell that grapples with student revolutions, colonial resistance, and the use of language and translation as the dominating tool of the British empire.

Traduttore, traditore: An act of translation is always an act of betrayal.

1828. Robin Swift, orphaned by cholera in Canton, is brought to London by the mysterious Professor Lovell. There, he trains for years in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Chinese, all in preparation for the day he’ll enroll in Oxford University’s prestigious Royal Institute of Translation—also known as Babel.

Babel is the world's center for translation and, more importantly, magic. Silver working—the art of manifesting the meaning lost in translation using enchanted silver bars—has made the British unparalleled in power, as its knowledge serves the Empire’s quest for colonization.

For Robin, Oxford is a utopia dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge. But knowledge obeys power, and as a Chinese boy raised in Britain, Robin realizes serving Babel means betraying his motherland. As his studies progress, Robin finds himself caught between Babel and the shadowy Hermes Society, an organization dedicated to stopping imperial expansion. When Britain pursues an unjust war with China over silver and opium, Robin must decide…

Can powerful institutions be changed from within, or does revolution always require violence?

I just finished the book and I am in awe. I know I’ll be thinking about it for a while. The narration is also perfect, I loved getting to hear the footnotes in a nondisruptive way.

The themes discussed by the author are so important & well presented. I am a HUGE dark academia fan. This was an incredibly refreshing take on the genre.

There were a couple of anachronism when it came to the way the characters spoke, but I think it might’ve been to make the book more accessible to its readers. It didn’t bother me enough to lower the score.

This was a really ambitious project and the author excelled in executing it.

Best book I’ve ever read

the narrator(s) is/are wonderful and bring life to the characters. The story is touching, riveting, and deep. Excellent production. The author's ability to dive deep into emotions, thoughts, and actions shines bright when they matter the most. It was one of the most engaging stories I've had the privilege to listen to on Audible.

Wonderful story. Moving meditation on race and colonialism. Loved the footnotes. Gifted narrator. Strongly recommend.

Thought-provoking.

Expected to love this but it took me forever to read (listen to). The plot didn’t really begin to go anywhere until halfway through when they went to China. Even then, there seems to be a promise of momentum that doesn’t pan out. The biggest issue was far too much narration for my tastes. The main character has only one dimension to his growth arc and dithers his way through until the very end. The magic system and translation info was great but not enough to make up for a so-so plot and the endless exposition that kept the characters at arm’s length.

Great concept with disappointing storytelling
