Gabriel Bergmoser offers a story about an unemployed/disgraced Investigative Reporter pursuing the mysterious death of a promising young University student/Writer in the company of a group of now rich & famous fellow authors. Phoebe Black's biggest personal flaw - overwhelming crusading "take-them-down" motivations - possibly color the likelihood of an overlooked murder.. making for a thought-provoking mystery.
Bergmoser tells the story through excerpts of memoirs written by the involved young writers, recorded interviews with them in modern day, and back & forth discussions between 'Phoebe' and her fastidious editor 'Sarah'. The different personalities of everyone involved are demonstrated with mind's-eye vivid skill (these people are incredibly realistic).

Doubtless, Audible Originals Inc's decision to cast the book with 11 narrators - effectively turning the novel into a radioplay - elevates the book and underlines the individual strengths & weaknesses in the characters (the emotive performances include lifelike hesitations and pauses that lend authenticity to the dialogue, for example). I honestly can't point to a subpar performance .

Altogether, 'Backstory' merits 9 stars out of 10. I thoroughly enjoyed this well-conceived and well-executed story. The main characters are probably more dislikable than the author intended - sometimes borderline manipulatively so - but you won't go wrong investing the time on the audiobook. I feel very fortunate to have gotten it off of the 'Plus' menu.. because it would rate a Credit.

Good twists and turns. Good character development. A well crafted story. I felt like I knew the characters and liked some of them and disliked others, just like in real life. The author took time with this novel. I will seek him out again. The narration was well done also.

I guess the climax can be a little bit shocking and unexpected but the story tied up nicely at the end.
