Publisher's Summary

This dark and twisty Batman in the blockbuster DC Icons series is an action-packed thrill ride from number one New York Times best-selling author Marie Lu.

An instant New York Times best seller

Before he was Batman, he was Bruce Wayne. A reckless boy willing to break the rules for a girl who may be his worst enemy.

The Nightwalkers are terrorizing Gotham City, and Bruce Wayne is next on their list. Bruce is turning 18 and inheriting his family's fortune, not to mention the keys to Wayne Industries and all the tech gadgetry that he could ever desire. But on the way home from his birthday party, he makes an impulsive choice that leads to community service at Arkham Asylum, the infamous prison. There, he meets Madeleine Wallace, a brilliant killer with ties to the Nightwalkers. A girl who will speak only to Bruce. She is the mystery he must unravel, but is he convincing her to divulge her secrets, or is he feeding her the information she needs to bring Gotham City to its knees?

Bruce Wayne is proof that you don't need superpowers to be a super hero, but can he survive Madeleine's game of tense intrigue and deception?

"Masterful.... A great story for any Dark Knight fan." (Den of Geek)

Phenomenal Story

Honestly I was worried at first, but this book really felt like an alternate “Year: 0” story. It’s gripping, and truly feels canonical to the Bruce Wayne story.

If you enjoy a well detailed, thrilling read, get this book.

Origin

I liked how we were in Bruce’s head. Though the endless amount of dreams and nightmares did get tiresome by the end. I liked the climax of the story but I felt like it too too long to get there, and there wasn’t really enough before it to fill in the gap. I loved the performance, and I found the different voices that Will Danton used to distinguish between Bruce and the other characters and the narration was good. The ultimate bad guy wasn’t expected which was really nice. And the plot twist at the end was also amazing. I would actually love to see a sequel of this one day...

Before the Bat

I love the Batman story. This is an interesting take on Bruce in a time period we don't often see. The narration is well done, however I wish a male and female could have done the voices together. I don't like when the narrator plays both male and female roles. I find it distracts me.

Don’t expect

Is like an entrance….very exiting though. Loved the performance. I’d love to know more about this Bruce Wayne. Hope there’s a 2nd part.

not batman

I listened to the hole book. the story was ok. but they could have change their names to redneck names and made no difference. seems like writer slapped batman characters names just to sell copies. this is not a batman story and can barley be called a Bruce Wayne story. nothing other than his wealth stood out as "Batmany"

Terrible

This had to be the worst Batman story yet. Even for a new origin story. Bruce Wayne is portrayed as week, dumb and whiny. In no one’s imagination can this Bruce grow up to be the great detective I know and love. I regret ever listening to it.

The narrator ruined the book!

This would have been a good story, but the narrator Wil Damron reading the women’s characters in a laughable “women’s voice” sounded so ridiculous and distracting! I didn’t even want to finish the audible because he made the characters sound like a joke. It’s too bad that he destroyed Marie Lu’s vision. He’s not even a good choice to read young Bruce Wayne. Very annoying and disappointing.
