Publisher's Summary

After her grandmother Arlette's death, Betty is finally ready to begin her life. She had forfeited university, parties, boyfriends, summer jobs - all the usual preoccupations of a woman her age - in order to care for Arlette. Now she's ready for whatever life throws at her, and, since the will included a beneficiary unknown to her who lives in the city, she heads there to find the mysterious woman....

In 1920s London, Arlette is starting her new life in a time of postwar change. Beautiful and charismatic, she's drawn into a hedonistic world, but then tragedy strikes, and she flees back to her childhood home....

When Betty's search leads her to a man - someone who meant the world to her grandmother - the secrets of Arlette's past may help Betty find her own way to happiness in the present....

A rich detective story and a captivating look at London then and now, Before I Met You is an unforgettable novel about two very different women, separated by 70 years but united by big hearts and even bigger dreams.

Beautiful story would make a good movie

It took me a little while to get used to the voices variation but it was worth the wait the only thing that bugged me a bit was the « he said she said » when it’s obvious who’s talking. But hey I loved it anyway

What an unpredictable ending

Great story. So many twists and turns, sadness, happy moments and full of mystery and intrigue. I love a good London story and the accents. This story was very unique and loved how genuine the 1920’s felt. The characters were so believable; their voices and descriptions made me feel like I would recognize them on the street if I ran into them. Couldn’t stop listening- finished the 15 hour book in 3 days!

Slow, but worthwhile

It took me a long time to get into the story. However, I did thoroughly enjoy it in the end.

Great book, terrible narrator.

Book was lovely. Really sweet story. Easy listen.

Accents were terrible, voices, except the main character were awful. Absolutely appalling actually. Really a shameful thing to do the book.

Slow start but worth it

The first half of the book was pleasant but quite slow and took me weeks to get through. But then as always, Lisa Jewell makes it worth your while and things really pick up. After that, I couldn't put it down! I'm glad I stayed the course. This book warmed my heart. The ending felt sincere. Such a lovely read.

Great story

The story was wonderful. The writing descriptive and colourful. Following the lives of Arlette and Betty in London’s Soho district was entertaining and interesting. Will definitely read more of Lisa Jewell’s work.
