The story begins with Nell, the “spinster on the hill” near St. Peter’s, Cape Breton. Scarred by her own childhood, she swears she could never love a child and that she will never marry, denying herself a life with the man she loves. She’s proven wrong when a baby is born just down the road from her. Her love of little Jane, despite herself, propels us forward through generations trying to untangle their own traumas and secrets. Eventually, we meet Bridie - joyful, kind, capable Bridie - and see her struggling through the echoing pain of those who came before her. Her choices, her bravery, her “nest of wonderful women”, and her ultimate refusal to settle for anything less than love eventually redeem her and everyone around her - even the spinster on the hill.

As real as our own family dramas, Beholden is full of Lesley Crewe’s trademark wit, heartbreaking losses, incredible women with unbreakable friendships and the sweet wildness of Cape Breton.

Good story, Narration poor

Almost gave up on this book due to the narration. While it did improve in the last half of the book I found it to be very wooden, lacking in feeling and rhythm. The story however kept me listening til the end.

Amazing

Lesley Crewe delivers with this one! however she always does.
It's captivating and you can't wait to get to the next line.

Prefect narrator

Listens to the whole book over the course of 3 days. I couldn’t ‘put it down’. I kiss all the characters already

did not enjoy listening to the person reading Beholden. wanted to stop listening but powered through

very poor choice of person to read Beholden. her voice is hard to listen to.

Amazing

My first (but not last) book by Lesley Crewe!
The book captured me from the first word! I loved the characters and the story. I felt like I was sitting in a kitchen in Nova Scotia as I listened. I can’t wait to start my next one!

Enjoyable

I have read other Lesley Crewe books but this was my first audible book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to the next one. It’s so we’ll written you feel like you are there in Cape Breton taken it all in.

Lesley has a lovely way of developing characters and valuing family and understanding how things can get complicated

The characters, the setting, the story and how it enfolds all make this a very enjoyable read.

Poor narrator

The story was wonderful but the narrator killed if for me. It felt like someone was reading me a book - complete with deep breaths and swallows. Not like the characters were talking. Too bad otherwise it would have been all 5’s

Cannot get enough!

Such a good story with such a brilliant flow! I love this author and look forward to starting her other book, “ The Spoon Stealer”.

Good story but poorly narrated

I was excited to listen to this after first listening to The Spoon Stealer, which was one of the most endearing stories with wonderful narration. For me, the narration of Beholden made it a difficult listen.
