Publisher's Summary

We all carry sexual shame. Whether we grew up in the repressive purity culture of American Evangelical Christianity or not, we've all been taught in subtle and not-so-subtle ways that sex (outside of very specific contexts) is immoral and taboo. Psychotherapist Matthias Roberts helps listeners overcome their shame around sex by overcoming three unhealthy coping mechanisms we use to manage that shame.

Beyond Shame encourages each of us to determine our own definition of healthy sex, while avoiding the ditches of boundary-less sex positivity on the one hand and strict moralistic boundaries on the other. Define your sexual values on your own terms, overcome your shame, and start having great, healthy sex.

Mostly just opinions

I was excited to read this book. There are some issues with the was the church has dealt with the topic of sex in the past, and I hoped that this would be an exploration of counterpoints to traditional thought.

The author mostly presents his own opinions as facts, and often doesn't justify or explain their basis. He describes more traditional views as harmful workout properly arguing or engaging with them. It seems mostly like a "throwing the baby out with the bath water" response to traditional Christian sex ethics than a balanced, researched book.

There is good in this book as well, a chapter discussing the brain chemistry during sex is very interesting, as well as some of the discussion around communication and consent. There is a brief word study on adultery in the Bible, but then the author dismisses the need to further discuss any biblical basis, saying there are lots of opinions on the topic so it's not necessary.

I have to say I'm pretty disappointed. If it was more well researched and actually entertained the intentions and values behind traditional ethics, this could have been a valuable book. Instead, it's a fairly frustrating collection of personal opinions and anecdotes supporting an "anything goes" attitude. Keep your mind open, I would but save your open mind for another book.
