I recently had an operation on my foot for which I opted to use local anesthetic rather than general. My doc recommended I take AirPods and distract myself with music. I decided listening to a story would distract me more and after googling I settled on Black! I was caught up in the story right away. I have 12-14 weeks of recovery and during the first few weeks I need to lie or sit with my foot elevated. I am only 2 weeks post-op and I’m already on the third book of the series. I was thinking today, I wish the story would not end. That makes for a great book and a great series! The characters are well developed and the settings are mystical. The story draws you in and you begin to compare yourself to the characters and even try to better your own way of thinking as the characters deal with their struggles and joys.
The reader does a great job, but did mess up one thing, though now I can’t remember what it was and in a couple of instances forgot to change his character voice but honestly he is fantastic as well. I will be listening to all of Ted Dekker’s books. I love to listen to a story while I’m cleaning. I have a broken vertebrae and listening distracts me from the pain. Once my foot is healed I’ll still be listening.
