6 a.m. on a dark autumn morning. Retired detective Bob Ruston is about to feed the dog when the doorbell rings. The man on the doorstep has blood running down his cheek and a look of terror on his face. 'Please! Let me in! They're going to kill me!'

Bob sees a handcuff dangling from the man's lacerated wrist.

Later that day, a stylishly dressed woman marches into Saltern-le-Fen police station demanding to see Detective Marie Evans. 'I want you to find my husband.'

Then a homeowner clearing undergrowth in his back garden makes a horrifying discovery. The decomposing remains of five bodies huddled in an old World War 2 pillbox.

Detective Jackman asks Interpol to issue a Black Notice. But little is he prepared for the shocking results that come in . . .

I have enjoyed all the many Fens books with different detectives and this one was no exception. While complex and at times challenging in keeping the story straight, it was another very well done book.

I greatly admire the mind of Joy Ellis. This latest book has done no more than to increase my need to read more. Every writing always ends in a shock and complete surprise throughout the story, you tend to imagine your “bad guy” - in Black Notice, I was certain I knew but again, I was wrong. Great Story, thank you can’t wait for the next one⁉️🤗

Talk about busy and convoluted! There were so many characters in this latest Joy Ellis novel that I couldn't keep track. Richard Armitage is one of the best audio book narrators and always does a remarkable job of using his voice to give each of the characters a recognizable "voice" but even he was seriously put to the test in this one. I do need to listen to this again to see how the threads all weave together but I really found it hard to follow and a few of the characters - especially Sal/Sarah and the real "Chaos" - just seemed totally unbelievable.

Another fabulous read. I was enthralled with all the twists and turns with so many sub plots . A surprise ending....not the perpetrator I thought!

I love how all the characters and storylines weave together. The main characters are believable and likeable. A very dark story but well written, complex, and engaging. Beautifully narrated, too.
