À propos de cet audio

Nebula Award Finalist: A genetic engineering breakthrough may portend the destruction of humanity in this cyberpunk novel by the author of The Forge of God.

This Hugo and Nebula Award finalist follows present-day events in which the fears concerning the nuclear annihilation of the world subsided after the Cold War and the fear of chemical warfare spilled over into the empty void it left behind.

An amazing breakthrough in genetic engineering made by Vergil Ulam is considered too dangerous for further research, but rather than destroy his work, he injects himself with his creation and walks out of his lab, unaware of just how his actions will change the world.

Author Greg Bear’s treatment of the traditional tale of scientific hubris is both suspenseful and a compelling portrait of a new intelligence emerging amongst us, irrevocably changing our world.

MILD SPOILERS

I don't know quite what to make of it.

It was not a "satisfying" listen. Not unsatisfying either. Just not all there.

The narrator is so good and the story interesting enough that I didn't want to abandon it unfinished. But there's no actual payoff for sticking with it. If you quit reading in the middle you'll have about the same stae of being as if you go to the end.

There are a couple of threads that look like they're going to lead to significant suspense, conflict or action. But nothing ever does. It's the same tenor start to end. I'm unlikely to get any more Greg Bear because it is clear he knows how to write well and just isn't interested in writing beyond a yoga mantra. If you listen you'll understand what I mean when he sets up some corporate bad guys version the MC and then basically forgets there was anything interesting going on there. Or how what would be a major international escapade becomes a paint-by-numbers therapy session. How the whole thing is put together is a bit weird. And not in a satisfying way.

A cerebral massage session

Great and interesting story. Terribly inconsistent sound levels on recording. The narrator was a great match for the story. Unfortunately, the volume is all over the place.

Terrible sound quality.

A whole chapter is missing from the audio , Otherwise I would have given better score.

chapter 28 missing!
