About this listen

June, 1852. A preacher's daughter with a secret. An outlaw running from the gallows. A love story spanning oceans and deserts and years.

When Abby Proctor is kidnapped from a train in the middle of the desert halfway to her new life in California, she makes a promise to herself—she will escape. Because there's a reason Abby is leaving Iowa and all its oppressions behind, and she refuses to be someone's prisoner again. Especially when that someone is the infamous female outlaw Joey "JT London" Taylor, Abby's brash, brooding, and inconveniently beautiful captor.

But as Abby plots her escape, she stumbles upon a larger conspiracy at play behind her kidnapping—a complicated revelation considering the feelings she's been having for Joey, who might not be the ruthless criminal everyone believes her to be. And when Abby realizes it's all connected—her kidnapping, the secrets she left behind in Iowa, even her plans in California—she has to decide between returning to a life of obedience and unhappiness, or trusting an enigmatic outlaw who is bound for the gallows.

Great listen, great characters and great narrating. Really enjoyed this story I purchased the second book half way through this one.

I don’t usually listen to audiobooks—honestly, I’ve tried before and found it hard to connect when the narrator’s voice doesn’t match what I’d imagined in my head. But after watching an interview with Ally North and narrator Quinn Riley, I was intrigued. The author was clearly thrilled with the performance, and hearing Quinn talk about her preparation and research made me curious enough to give it a try.

I’m so glad I did. The Bloom Town – Genesis audiobook is exceptional. Quinn Riley brings this world to life with such authenticity and depth. She moves seamlessly between so many voices—women, men, and even children—with both a young boy’s and girl’s perspective perfectly captured. The range of accents, from London to Indigenous, feels natural and respectful. Every emotion lands.

This is one of those rare pairings where story and narration elevate each other. Ally North’s writing is vivid and heartfelt, and Quinn Riley’s performance matches it note for note. Together, they’ve created something truly special.

Exceptional Story, Perfectly Voiced

Wow, just wow. One of my top 5 reads this year. And honestly can’t wait for the 2nd book to come out. Such real characters and such real depth. A book I will for sure reread multiple times, all 16+ hours of it. The depth of emotion and feeling, will not easily leave me. 10/10 would recommend.
