About this listen

In AD 60, Boudica, war leader of the Eceni, led her people in a final bloody revolt against the occupying armies of Rome. It was the culmination of nearly twenty years of resistance against an occupying force that sought to crush a vibrant, complex civilization and replace it with the laws, taxes and slavery of the Roman Empire. Gloriously imagined, Boudica: Dreaming the Eagle recreates the beginnings of a story so powerful its impact has survived through the ages, recounting the coming of age of Breaca, who at twelve kills her first warrior. This is the unforgettable world of tribal Britain in the years before the Romans came: a twilight world of Dreamers and the magic of the gods; a world where warriors fight for honour as much as victory. It is a world of passion and courage and spectacular, heart-felt heroism pitched against overwhelming odds.©2003 Manda Scott (P)2020 Bolinda Publishing Alternate History Fiction Historical Fiction Science Fiction Warrior Heartfelt

What the critics say

'The best in the current crop of novels about Rome, its empire and its victims ... never sentimental and always tough-minded.' (The Independent)
'A powerful novel, alive with the love, deceit, wisdom and the heroics of humanity.' (Jean M. Auel)

So good. Grounded and exciting.

The first half of the story had me thinking that it could end up in my top 10 list. However, the plot starts to unravel into a series of unbelievable and unsubstantiated outcomes. Overall it was an enjoyable book.
Unfortunately, the female narrator is not for my liking. I found that my mind was wandering off when she was reading and had to force myself to listen. She brings action scenes to life really well but when she reads general text it can become mundane. I will read the next in the Boudica series and hopefully it is better.

Solid story.

I read this book the first time many years ago, have reread it and the rest of the series two more times. When I saw it available in an audio book it was like a gift from an old friend. The narrators do an amazing job brining the characters to life. Loved it all over again!

I don't read a lot if fiction, but I really enjoyed this. Boudica is my hero, and the book was well researched. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

my new favourite book!

For a fictional story, I expected more. No character development, no climax, no conclusion that finished the story. You don't hear about her marriage, her daughters, or her death. I kept waiting for something to happen. The author spent so much time on the Historical details that she forgot about the STORY.

A terrible book.

Boring, uneventful
