Story
Kara Goucher grew up with Olympic dreams. She excelled at running from a young age and was offered a Nike sponsorship deal when she graduated from college. Then in 2004, she was invited to join a secretive, lavishly funded new team, dubbed the Nike Oregon Project. Coached by distance running legend Alberto Salazar, it seemed like the opportunity of a lifetime. Kara was soon winning a World Championship medal, going to the Olympics, and standing on the podium at the New York and Boston marathons, just like her coach. But behind the scenes, Salazar was hiding dark secrets.

Lauren Fleshman has grown up in the world of running. One of the most decorated collegiate athletes of all time and a national champion as a pro, she was a major face of women’s running for Nike before leaving to shake up the industry with feminist running brand Oiselle and now coaches elite young female runners. Every step of the way, she has seen the way that our sports systems—originally designed by men, for men and boys—fail young women and girls as much as empower them. Written with heart and verve, Good for a Girl is a joyful love letter to the running life.

Story
Deena Kastor was a star youth runner with tremendous promise, yet her career almost ended after college, when her competitive method - run as hard as possible, for fear of losing - fostered a frustration and negativity and brought her to the brink of burnout. On the verge of quitting, she took a chance and moved to the high altitudes of Alamosa, Colorado, where legendary coach Joe Vigil had started the first professional distance-running team. There she encountered the idea that would transform her running career: the notion that changing her thinking - shaping her mind to be more encouraging, kind, and resilient - could make her faster than she’d ever imagined possible.

When Des woke up on April 16, 2018, the morning of the Boston Marathon, it was 39 degrees and raining, with high, gusty winds. The weather didn’t bother her. In fact, she thought it might be a blessing. She was far from peak form—recovering from illness and questioning her running future—and didn’t expect much of herself that day. But as she ticked off mile after mile in the brutal conditions, passing familiar landmarks on the course she knew and loved, something shifted. Opportunity unexpectedly presented itself. Des tapped into her inner strength and found a reason to race.

Publisher's Summary
The Olympic runner, actress, filmmaker and writer Alexi Pappas shares what she’s learned about confidence, self-reliance, mental health, embracing pain, and achieving your dreams.
Named One of the Best Books of the Year by Real Simple
“Heartbreaking and hilarious.” (Mindy Kaling)

“Essential guidance to anyone dreaming big dreams.” (Shalane Flanagan)
“I couldn’t put it down.” (Adam Grant)
run like a bravey

When “Renaissance runner” (New York Times) Alexi Pappas - Olympic athlete, actress, filmmaker, and writer - was four years old, her mother died by suicide, drastically altering the course of Pappas’s life and setting her on a search for female role models. When her father signed his bereaved daughter up for sports teams as a way to keep her busy, female athletes became the first women Pappas looked up to, and her Olympic dream was born. At the same time, Pappas had big creative dreams, too: She wanted to make movies, write, and act. Despite setbacks and hardships, Pappas refused to pick just one lane. She put in a tremendous amount of hard work and wouldn’t let anything stand in her way until she achieved all of her dreams, however unrelated they may seem to outsiders. In a single year, 2016, she made her Olympic debut as a distance runner and wrote, directed, and starred in her first feature film.
But great highs are often accompanied by deep lows; with joy comes sorrow. In Bravey, Pappas fearlessly and honestly shares her battle with post-Olympic depression and describes how she emerged on the other side as a thriving and self-actualized woman. Unflinching, exuberant, and always entertaining, Bravey showcases Pappas’s signature, charming voice as she reflects upon the touchstone moments in her life and the lessons that have powered her career as both an athlete and an artist - foremost among them, how to be brave.
Pappas’s experiences reveal how we can all overcome hardship, befriend pain, celebrate victory, relish the loyalty found in teammates, and claim joy. In short: how every one of us can become a bravey.
What the critics say
“This is not only an inspiring look inside the mind of a gifted athlete - it’s an arresting debut by a gifted writer. Alexi Pappas reveals how we can find the courage to face our fears, the grit to achieve our goals, and the resilience to bounce forward after failure and heartbreak. I couldn’t put it down.” (Adam Grant, number-one New York Times best-selling author of Originals)
“Pappas’ extraordinary tale is skillfully told and profoundly inspiring." (Publishers Weekly)
"Inspiring, yes, but more to the point: genuinely empowering. An utterly winning collection of personal essays.” (Kirkus starred review)

I wanted to love this!
I love seeing and hearing Alexi in interviews and podcasts. unfortunately I had such a hard time getting into this. I had to force myself to finish it. while there are some good moments, she tends to drone on and on and hop around the timeline which I found very confusing. I did however love the forward done by Maya Rudolph.

I now see myself differently
I have struggled with depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts for several years now. This book felt uncomfortable at first when she would talk about her mother’s mental health struggles so candid. As I continued to listen, and heard Alexi’s struggles, I began to feel like I wasn’t alone. I felt uncomfortable at first because I had felt the pain she describes when related to mental health issues, but hearing it can affect successful people normalized it for me. This book may make you cry both sad and good tears, and it is well worth it!!! This book made me see my mental health struggles as only a part of my story rather than something that has to take over my whole life.

Very Disappointing
This book is a lot like going to concert only to have them not play their hits. For a runner and Olympian she spends a surprisingly small amount of the book talking about those two things. If you’re a runner looking for a running book or inspiration, look elsewhere.

So relatable-- yes even for non runners!
Easily one of the best books I have listened to. Although I am a runner, I do believe this book is good for anyone. Alexi doesn't get into many details of the running. so if that's not your thing, don't worry! Give this book a try. Both inspirational and motivating, yet down to earth and relatable. I think many people would benefit from listening. The insights from her life experiences were profound. You come away from every section inspired and hopeful, and as if anything in the world is possible. I simply can not encourage you to listen to this book enough!

As a runner, I really wanted to like this book, but it was only okay. There were some interesting, and very descriptive stories that I enjoyed. But I stuggled with the narration and lack of highs and lows.

This book made me feel seen
I am not an Olympian or a professional athlete, but I do run a lot. The reason I run is primarily to cope with depression. When I’m in a particularly bad way (as recently occurred, and is still occurring) running is sometimes the only thing that brings me joy.
This whole book is wonderful, but in particular, I am infinitely grateful for the chapter(s) where Alexi discusses her relationship with depression. I have seldom heard someone else articulate my own emotional reality in such a way that resonates so deeply and so spot on.
I was listening to the book on a run while in an especially brutal depressive episode and cried twice while in motion to hear a stranger articulate my own thoughts and feelings. I felt suddenly less crazy and alone.
There is no one thing that can save anyone from depression or suicidal ideation, but this book is an invaluable tool for me that is helping more than I ever could have expected.
Thank you Alexi. You’re saving lives with this book.

Enjoyed Parts of the Book
I was moved by Alexi’s openness and vulnerability in describing her experiences with mental health. She also brought additional light to the changes that are needed in high school sports to prevent harm to women. Her approach to these topics alone make the book worth reading. Other topics felt underdeveloped.
The use of similes was clever at times but overall too frequent for me and became very distracting. The tone of the reading was also a bit distracting since it doesn’t match her tone and style when she speaks in other mediums and feels detached.

Not for me.
I picked up this book because I generally enjoy memoirs, and because I’m a runner. And while others may enjoy it, this book was not for me.
I found the story to jump around without a clear structure, be boring at times, self-congratulatory at others, and know-it-all at others. I should have broken my self-inflicted rule of “I must finish a book I started” and saved myself from hours of listening to something I actively did not enjoy.
The one takeaway I enjoyed was the idea that actions must come first. Actions, and then Thoughts, and then Feelings will follow. This is not a new concept to me, but the reminder was timely.
I’m sure others will disagree and love this book. But it was not for me.
