Publisher's Summary

Nils Shapiro has been hired to find missing Linnea Engstrom, a teenager from the small northern hockey town of Warroad, Minnestota. Most of Warroad is in Minneapolis for the state high school hockey tournament, and Linnea never returned from last night's game. Linnea's friend Haley Housch is also missing - and soon found dead.

Shot through the arm with an arrow at the Haley Housch crime scene, Nils should be in the hospital recovering from his near fatal injury, but he knows that the clock is ticking. Linnea could be anywhere, and someone doesn't want her found. Is Linnea a victim, or is she playing a dangerous game? As bodies start piling up, the clues lead Nils and Ellegaard north to Warroad, a small, quiet town with many secrets to hide.

Creditable Book Two

There are definitely drawbacks to this second PI novel in a promising series, but some improvements, too. Matt Goldman's characters aren't terribly relatable, but actions are largely realistic and dialogue is plausible. The mystery itself (investigating a missing teenaged girl from a northern Minnesota hockey tournament) is less twisty/complex than the murder in Book One.. but I didn't predict the villain early in this one and the pacing is better. The protagonist is annoyingly sarcastic (actually moderately unlikable) but more self-confident than the emotional mess we saw in 'Gone To Dust', too.
As I said.. neither improved nor deficient..

MacLean Andrews turns in a "very good" performance in this episode in the 'Nils Shapiro' series. As in Book One, his dry delivery matches the sarcastically humorous voice-over of Nils perfectly. Andrews's diction, timbre, cadence, and voice-acting are similarly outstanding (his 6'7" 310lb nurse practitioner 'Jamieson White' is *fantastic*). Less fortunately, his overall tone lacks emotion - Andrews sounds mildly bored somehow.
The narration is hence professional but unspectacular.

Taken in toto, I rate this sophomore offering worthy of 7 stars out of 10. I am very happy that Audible added it to the 'Plus' catalogue - because it's worth a Credit (that I didn't need to spend). It's a great little mystery for a couple of snowy afternoons.

Book 2

Smart, sassy, sexy, eh. Love it when the reader throws in some Minnesota accents. Let's goo.

A most entertaining story.

Goldman’s main character Nils is easy to relate too; I have caught myself smiling while listening to his dialog while on my walk. A good thing during this trying time. The narrator, Andrews is a perfect match for this story. Great Canadian references except it’s smoke meat not corn beef at Swartz’s. Moving on to the next one, thanks Matt good Covid beater.

Good book and narrator, but mispronouncing

Don’t listen if you’re from Minnesota because the seemingly experienced narrator didn’t research common pronunciation of key place names. Otherwise entertaining mystery.
