Luxuriant Environmentalism

Make a huge, positive, global difference from your own home! Prioritize comfort over sacrifice while saving thousands of dollars. Explore dozens of solutions and their impacts on carbon footprint, petroleum footprint, toxic footprint, and other environmental issues.

If 20 percent of the population implemented half the solutions in this book, it would solve the biggest global problems. All without writing to politicians, joining protests, signing petitions, or being angry at the people that are causing the problems.

Good solutions are often different from conventional environmental wisdom. The average American adult has a carbon footprint of 30 tons per year. Replacing a petroleum car with an electric car will cut 2 tons. But if you live in a cold climate and you switch from electric heat to a rocket mass heater, you will cut 27 tons!

Join Paul and Shawn on a journey featuring simple alternatives that you may have never heard of - alternatives that are about building a more symbiotic relationship with nature so we can all be even lazier.

Nurture nature and nature nurtures us all.

What can I do? First, buy the book!

Having listened and watched quite a few of Paul's podcasts and videos, I got to know his voice and manner of speaking fairly well, so when I first heard the narration in the audio book of someone else, it took a bit to get used to putting his words in the mouth of someone else. Certainly not a show stopper, just a notable impression it had on me. I'm sure I'll get over it. :)
Anyway, the book covers a whole lot of subjects that for the most part could be in any order which makes it perfect for placing on the coffee table - To pick it up and open the book at random and have it as a reminder of what I can do to help live more in harmony with the Earth. A perfect time would be right after watching the news!
Some of the things suggested are a little out of my league of what I would feel comfortable doing, but as mentioned in the book, you decide on your level of participation.
Overall, Paul and Shawn give you enough examples of living the changes that are going to do something so your not left with a feeling of: "that's nice, but what can I do"?

Positive steps forward for a better life

This is a great introduction into Paul Wheaton's take on Permaculture. In a way that stays apolitical throughout, quite the feat, and necessary, these days, Paul and Shawn look at a variety of public issues, asking pertinent questions that others seem to ignore, and suggesting a personal path of growth that many people can take, or use as inspiration on their own paths.

Something for everyone!

The best thing this book does is encourage critical thinking. There are so many assumptions that go largely unquestioned, often backed with serious propaganda from those who profit. 'Standard practice' is just plain dumb in a lot of weird cases. Whether you agree with every viewpoint in this book or not, it's a great series of exercises in critical thinking.

The content ranges from very accessible (lawn care that works better, costs less, and harms less!) to moderately advanced (Rocket mass heaters) through to still in development (a further evolution of environmentally friendly earth sheltered homes). For the more advanced subjects, this book is an introduction with a decent amount of substance.

Narrator did a great job, but he's not Paul Wheaton. Where is the furious cursing?

Why on earth are there no chapter titles?

A Book to Get Your 'Environmental' Mojo Going!

I love this book!

It's a book to get you thinking, re-evaluating, and lastly doing! It's a book about solutions, for everyone; rather than a book full of nasty things that make you feel bad about being human. The best thing is that this book is just a starting line; it gets you fired up and hungry for more creative, purposeful, and exciting ways to live a life of 'luxuriant environmentalism'.

Michael does a great job narrating, but I can't help missing Paul's laughter at his own jokes ;)

Thank you Paul & Shawn for your inspirational work!
