FINALIST: The Audie Awards 2016

Audible Originals brings you a brand new audiobook adaptation of J. Sheridan Le Fanu’s classic gothic novella, Carmilla - starring Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones and Downton Abbey), David Tennant (Doctor Who and Broadchurch) and Phoebe Fox (Life in Squares and The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death).

One of the very first vampire thrillers, this audio adaptation follows 18-year-old Laura as she recounts the story of her mysterious, intriguing and beautiful house guest Carmilla, who is stranded in the forest after a carriage accident and taken in by Laura’s widowed father. The girls develop a friendship which turns into a passionate meeting of souls. A relationship of vampire and prey, the story is told through Laura’s eyes as she is drawn further into Carmilla’s terrifying world of pleasure and pain.

A masterpiece of erotic Gothic horror, Carmilla encompasses mystery, suspense, forbidden lust, violence...and lots of blood....

Carmilla has been dramatised by Robin Brooks, an actor, dramatist and author who has been working as a playwright for over 25 years. Carmilla was directed by Fiona McAlpine of Allegra Productions for Audible Originals.

    Fantastic performance and enthralling story!

Absolutely worth a listen! I was enraptured by this book! The performances were fantastic - especially that of David Tennant.

    Too Theatrical

The main thing that made this a disappointing listen for me was not the acting per se, but how it was acted. If a character was speaking from the other side of the room, for example, their voice would be quieter and have an echo to it. If a carriage arrived on scene, actual horse sound effects would be played at a realistic volume. Narration was twice as loud as characters speaking. Rather than describe a fight scene, a montage of metal clangs and grunts would awkwardly play instead of describing the action. The result was my constantly turning the volume up and down, straining to hear what was being said and sometimes confused as to who was saying it, or being frustrated at the often out of place sound effects.

    A Compelling Gothic Story

This novella took me by surprise. It's mysterious, engaging, a little bit sensual, and perfect for anyone looking for an October evening read. It follows the story of a young woman named Laura who befriends a strange woman named Carmilla. As the two grow closer and strange things begin happening, it's clear that Carmilla is not what she appears to be.

Of course there are heavy similarities between this story and Dracula, though the two are different enough that it doesn't feel like the exact same book. The novella is short enough that the pacing is never dragged out, yet enough happens that I never felt bored by it. The relationship between Laura and Carmilla is compelling and complex, given the time this was written at.

I really enjoyed this novella. It was creepy, fun, and something all lovers of vampires cane enjoy.

    Really Good

The acting was top notch, and I liked the full cast, but certain scenes were just people making out in your ear for a few minutes...

    Original written BEFORE Dracula

Not my usual genre, truly fascinated that this came out BEFORE Dracula. The chemistry between Laura and Camila is fascinating.

    Truly enjoyable production

    A great quick listen

Good luck putting this one down! I finished it while doing the dishes and cleaning up. I look forward to seeing what else this author has written.
