Story
Hordes of tall, grey aliens with tusks arrived in spaceships the size of cities. Before the news channels went dark, humans named the creatures orcs. The human armies fought and failed. War crimes were committed on both sides. Eventually, when food supplies failed, society collapsed and the government was overthrown. Humans turned on each other. Nowhere was safe. The orcs rounded up the survivors and locked them away in refugee camps. In the fullness of time, some women had little grey babies.

He is ice cold. Both his personality and his skin. When his icy gaze lands on me it freezes me temporarily, but the first time he touches me....Sparks fly. Not the romantic kind. For most, a plane crash means the end of life. For Dusti Dawson, it's just the beginning...Dusti and her sister Batina survived the crash, thanks to a couple of brothers who are equal parts menacing and muscled. She'd be grateful...if they hadn't turned out to be delusional kidnappers, who believe Dusti's grandfather is some monstrous halfbreed creature bent on murder. Turns out Vampires, Lycans, and Gargoyles do exist - and they've been crossbreeding to form two hybrid races.

Aliens. That's right. I said it. I know - it sounds stupid to me also. I'm a psychologist (sort of), so you'd think I'd be able to reason my way out of this mess. Except the reality is that I've been abducted to become their breeder, and it doesn't take an advanced degree to recognize this is all sorts of jacked up. But I digress. Apparently, these aliens are on the brink of extinction and need me and my fellow captives to repopulate. Yay us. I guess it's time to figure out an escape plan before they knock me up. I'll be back later. Hopefully.

Story
We’d heard rumors about the Vandar raiders — everyone in the galaxy had. Terrifying and ruthless, they were a scourge on the Zagrath empire and destroyed everything in their path. Few had actually laid eyes on the Vandar or the notorious warlords who led their fleets of warships — and survived to talk about it. So, when the ruthless aliens boarded our ship intent on destroying it and killing the crew, I did the only thing I could do. I gave myself to the dark and menacing warlord.

Cathian
I have been dying to listen to this series.
As a fan of Laurann I wasn’t sure what to expect just to expect different and that is exactly what we got. This is unlike any of her other series. I love that we have an alien of sorts and a human but the fact that she knows about other life forms that was kind of nice.
The world building was spot on it wasn’t too much of an overload but there was enough description that you were never confused. I really like all the side characters we have met and I hope we see more of them as the series goes on because some of there were very entertaining.
Nara is a funny human in the aspect that she doesn’t just do as she is told, she uses her mind and won’t take no for an answer and is persuasive without lying I quite liked that. Also with how short these stories are the connection she and Captain Cathian have really shined through. I didn’t feel the instalove, it was fast yes but gradual.
I enjoyed the narration Callie is a great narrator and it is nice to have a change invoices from one series to the next. I was very pleased.

Good short if you like Dohner
This is a good short story if you like Dohner’s work. It’s more into sex than substance, but not really graphic. Nowhere near as graphic as some of her earlier books.
Dohner’s books have a polish that isn’t common in this genre, and is the reason I have all her Zorn and Cyborg books. Her New Species series didn’t draw me in, and the Vampire Lycan Gargoyle (?) series was too convoluted when I tried the first two books.
Dalton does a good job of narration; she’s solid in this genre. She’s good at giving differentiation between male and female characters.

More Laurran Dohner!!
I have to admit that I'm a bit bias when it comes to anything from Laurann Dohner. Everything that she writes, for me is amazing. Even some of her stories that I can't get behind is outshined by her writing style that just drags me. Of course everybody has plots or tropes when it comes to stories that they enjoy but for me everything she writes is great.
This is a new series for me. I have read every single last one of her series from New Species to Nightwind Pack. When I say I'm a fan I mean I am a fan. This series is something new to me however she has another series that is scfi based.
I enjoyed this quick story. I enjoyed Nara which I did not think I was going to. In the beginning she came across as high handed but as the story progressed I realized why she is the way she is. I loved all the side characters as well within the story and I am very excited for each of the males and the females to get mates. I also loved Cathian. He is the type of male that you read about and I swoon over. When he is in his stable mind he is considerate and very caring. He didn't give me crazy alpha male vibes that meant he is full of himself. He actually thing6s about his crew and Nara before he thinks about himself which is a breath of fresh air.
The narrator wasn't the best but it was tolerable. At times it was great and at other times it was not the best but again it did in deter me from continuing listening to this story.

Great first book!
I really enjoyed this audiobook by one of my favorite authors, Laurann Dohner. This sci-fi series is set on a space ship called The Vorge and the hero is the captain. A catlike humanoid species Cathian is in desperate need of a female when he unexpectedly goes into heat.
The heroine is the captain of a trading vessel who got arrested and her ship impounded by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. She’s given a choice of 2 years in a brutal prison or being sold as a sex slave, and she doesn’t want to go to prison. When she’s purchased by Cathian’s crew to get him through his week of heat, things get hot and heavy from the first minute she’s thrown into his room. But as they get to know each other, things become complicated as a ship carrying women from his planet are on their way to intercept them so that he can have sex with one of them. Narration was well done!

Teen crush = eyeroll headache
Omg I'm halfway through and I'm not sure I can continue to listen to the pathetic pleas and feelings of the simpering naive twit that was bought as a hooker and in 5 days, fell in puppy love tweeny adoration with an ambassador manchild. I'm not sure if the narrators performance increased the absurdity of juvenile lust but good lord, it's like a soap opera or high school sitcom. Idiotic immature conversations, clingy weepy heartsick starry eyed, happy ending sucker fool. A girl willing to be abused sexually to try to snag a boyfriend. The reprehensible behavior is appalling when the social culture is American grade school perpetuating unhealthy feminine roles.

sex in space
this felt like 100 words besides -> sex in space. Too bad, I would like a story about how this human woman was brought on board and how she got to know the captain and crew and etc.. But all felt like a slim framework for constant sex.

As all of Laurann Dohner's book it was amazing. The story line was romantic and very sexy. And the narrator spoke clear and told the story beautifully.
