Publisher's Summary

In this audiobook in the number one New York Times best-selling series, vampire hunter Anita Blake learns what it's like to be at the new end of a centuries-old bloodline - and just how far she’ll let herself get pushed around.

Once a sworn enemy of all monsters, Anita is now the human consort of both Jean-Claude, the master vampire, and Micah, the leopard shape-shifter. Not quite as human as she once was, she is consumed by both their hungers - desires that must be sated time and time again.

When a centuries-old vampire targets Jean-Claude and his clan, Anita finds herself tested as never before - needing all the dark forces her passion can muster to save the ones she loves the most....

What the critics say

“Hamilton remains one of the most inventive and exciting writers in the paranormal field.” (Number one New York Times best-selling author Charlaine Harris)

“If you’ve never read this series, I highly recommend/strongly suggest having the Anita Blake experience. Vampires, zombies, and shifters, oh my! And trust me, these are not your daughter’s vampires.” (Literati Book Reviews)

“Number one New York Times best seller Hamilton is still thrilling fans...with her amazing multifaceted characters and intricate multilayered world, a mix of erotic romance, crime drama, and paranormal/fantasy fiction. Her descriptive prose is gritty and raw, with a mosaic of humor and horror to tell this complex, well-detailed story. But it’s her enigmatic stable of stars that continues to shine, managing their improbable interpersonal relationship dynamics." (Library Journal)

Decent story, but the narrator is 😒

Maybe I’m just used to the previous narrator’s voice but I just can’t really click with this, it feels like she’s trying too hard to be sexy. It’s coming off a little weird 🤔. My issues with the narrator are only that, I’m still a fan of the story and the writing

I miss Kimberly Alexis!

The narrator sounds bored! And every time she says “we’re-wolf” it pulls me out of the story. There was a part where every other word was “Werewolf” and it was painful to listen to.

What happened to Kimberly Alexis?

I have to say that I love this series and this book was hard to get through. The new narrator made it harder to listen to because she wasn't able to make the male characters distinguishable from each other.

We miss Kimberly.

Werewolves pronounced we're wolves, Anita voiced like a whiny phone sex operator, and so much more. Good story, love the characters, can't stand this narrator.

New narrator?

Such a lack of emotion or the ability to make voice sound even a little distinct. Have read the book before and it's good. Just this narrator was lack luster.

Great book!

I love the Anita Blake serie and this book is great!
The narrator is pretty good, the only thing that I don’t like is when she says “werewolf”, it sounds like “we’rewolf” and it drags me out of the story.
Otherways, I love it!

Kimberly Alexis, please come back!!!!

How are we supposed to accept a narrator that is so inferior to the narration of the previous 10 or so books? This author writes to many French characters to have a narrator that doesn't even come close. I suppose we were just spoiled with Kimberly Alexis.

Narrator doesn't do Anita justice

Let me start by saying I LOVE Anita. I have read the entire series through multiple times and listened to all audible titles at least twice, some more than that. I was thrilled to see audible was releasing the missing books from the middle of the series. The storyline is great- you see furry politics, vampire grandstanding and a truly disturbing serial killer case.
The downside-Cynthias narration leaves a LOT to be desired for me. For one thing- her pronunciation of wereanimals is WEER instead of WERE... it pulls me out of the story every time. Her French pronunciation is very... American. Phrases are mispronounced and the accent is a bit distracting. She doesnt quite capture the essence of Anita... Anita is highly sarcastic and cynical while remaining somewhat innocent in ways. Cynthia manages to put a sultry, come-hither quality to many statements that should be sarcastic or downright scathing. It does not match the situation and can be very disruptive and confusing. I'm sure she would be a great narrator for a different series, but she is not a great fit for Anita. Her voices don't differentiate much between characters and I found myself pulled out of the story and longing for Kimberly Alexis...
Overall, it is still a great book and I wouldn't return it because I love the series. However, I am not anticipating the other books narrated by her as I was prior to listening.

Bottom rated narrator for a top rated author...ugh

I'm so glad they go back to Kimberly Alexis after the couple of books this one narrated. I'm hoping I can choke down the rest of this book and the others she's done until it gets back to Alexis doing the narrating. Now Alexis isn't perfect, her French accent is bad, but I can handle that when the rest of the narration is phenomenal. This one is just all bad. Her cadence off, her voices non existent, and she so totally cannot deliver the main character's humor/ sarcasm. Her narration is more suited to some teeny bopper romance, with some bobble headed teenage character; not a sarcastic, tough, mature woman. She needs a good bit less Buffy and a bit more Selene. I love the books as soon as every hardcopy was available I had bought them. I'm now collecting them on my kindle and audible so I can listen while I do other things, but this narrator is killing me. I'm 25% of the way through and I'm not sure I can finish with the narration, which sucks bc I'm in the middle of rereading them all.

Pronunciation

Overall I enjoyed the book but she pronounces words wrong. Like instead of werewolf she says we're wolf.

Great story ruined by narrator

I LOVE Anita and have been a fan since 2013. I couldn't finish this book! This woman has zero business passing whatever she is doing off as a French accent. How do I/we start a petition to have Kimberly rerecord the books she didn't read for us.

I Do not like the Narrator!

The book loses a lot with this Narrator. She does not speak French very well or say the shape shifter terms very well. She doesn’t do the voices of others very well and sounds like a teenager. I love Laurell and her books but this book doesn’t keep my attention because this Narrator is nothing like the one who did the first 10 books.

UGhhhh

This story like all the others in the Anita Blake series was awesome. But this narrator was TERRIBLE! Bring back Kimberly Alexis...at least she doesn't mispronounce stuff like WEER-wolves

Same Great Story Terrible Narration

This is a great book with all of the old familiar characters. I have to say that the narrator made it hard for me to finish the book. if I wasn't a die hard Anita Blake fan, I couldn't have even finished. She pronounced werewolf incorrectly. She kept saying "weirwolf " and it made me crazy! She did no accent for Jean-Claude or Asher and the french accent that she did for Musette sounded more Russian. Please bring back Kimberly Alexis in the future.

Bring back Kimberly Alexis!!!

Cynthia Halloway sounds like some sultry mistress, but Kimberly sounded like Anita. Also, Cynthia pronounces words really freaking weird. It’s WEREwolf (or leapoard, or whatever) not WEERwolf. Who the hell pronounces it like that??? Also other words and names are said weird and it is just bad. She’d be great in some other book but NOT as Anita.

Poor performance

The story was just ok. The narrator didn't make it any better. She doesn't give enough of a pause and she has a lisp. Very distracting. It is a struggle to listen to the rest of the book. I might just read the rest of the story.
