Publisher's Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
Charity Steane has nothing in the world but hope.
Escaping a miserable life under her tyrannical aunt, she decides to take her chances with her estranged grandfather in London. Now it's just a matter of finding him.... And as a 'charity girl' with no dowry and no options, hope can only get her so far.
But with the help of the dashing and kind-hearted Desford and his dearest friend Hetta, it seems like Charity's fortunes might be about to change.
That is, until the surprise appearance of a long-lost relative throws things into chaos and suddenly the three friends find themselves surrounded by blackmail and scandal.
Will their efforts to do right by each other plunge them all into ruin?
What the critics say
"Absolutely delicious tales of Regency heroes [...] Utter, immersive escapism." (Sophie Kinsella)
"I could mainline Heyer's Regency romances until the end of time and still not get bored [...] Georgette Heyer is perfect lockdown escapism." (India Knight)
"One of my perennial comfort authors. Heyer's books are as incisively witty and quietly subversive as any of Jane Austen's." (Joanne Harris)

Almost perfect
The one problem I had with this narration was the accent used for the character Charity. It grated on the ear. I think this narrator, who was good in all other respects, could have created something a little less fake and jarring. Luckily she’s a relatively minor character or I would not have finished listening despite loving Georgette Heyer’s regency books.

Not a strong narrator
Another entertaining story, with an especially well-drawn ‘confidence man’. The narrator manages the male voices adequately, but by no means with the aplomb of a Phyllida Nash or Eve Matheson. It’s the female voices, however, that are cartoonish and absurd, completely ruining the listening experience. The older recording also left much to be desired, but the new recording was a great disappointment. Many words are simply mispronounced, as well, which just seems unnecessary.
I will stay with my original version and hoping for a better remake in the future.

Not worth it
Heyer’s earlier books are much better. Less jargon, characters and plot line are more thoughtfully developed elsewhere.
Narrator’s voice for Charity is unpleasant. Pass!
