True crime writer Wylie Lark doesn’t mind being snowed in at the isolated farmhouse where she’s retreated to write her new book. A cozy fire, complete silence. Polly, Annie, Elizabeth, Catherine, and Mary-Jane are famous for the same thing, though they never met. What they had in common was the year of their murders: 1888. The person responsible was never identified, but the character created by the press to fill that gap has become far more famous than any of these five women. For more than a century, newspapers have been keen to tell us that "the Ripper" preyed on prostitutes. Not only is this untrue, as historian Hallie Rubenhold has discovered, but it has prevented the real stories of these fascinating women from being told.

Publisher's Summary
Have you ever wanted to solve a murder? Gather the clues the police overlooked. Put together the pieces. Identify the suspect.
Journalist Billy Jensen spent 15 years investigating unsolved murders, fighting for the families of victims. Every story he wrote had one thing in common - it didn’t have an ending. The killer was still out there.
But after the sudden death of a friend, crime writer Michelle McNamara, Billy became fed up. Following a dark night, he came up with a plan. A plan to investigate past the point when the cops have given up. A plan to solve the murders himself.
In Chase Darkness with Me, you’ll ride shotgun as Billy identifies the Halloween Mask Murderer, finds a missing girl in the California Redwoods, and investigates the only other murder in New York City on 9/11. You’ll hear intimate details of the hunts for two of the most terrifying serial killers in history: his friend Michelle’s pursuit of the Golden State Killer which is chronicled in I’ll Be Gone In The Dark which Billy helped finish after Michelle’s passing, and his own quest to find the murderer of the Allenstown 4 family.
And Billy gives you the tools - and the rules - to help solve murders yourself.
Gripping, complex, unforgettable, Chase Darkness with Me is an examination of the evil forces that walk among us, illustrating a novel way to catch those killers, and a true crime narrative unlike any you’ve listened to before.
With a foreword by Karen Kilgariff of My Favorite Murder.

True Crime with So Much Heart
Billy Jensen's "Chase Darkness With Me" was bound to be good, considering his writing experience, but I never expected it to be so emotionally captivating. He struck a perfect balance between the clinical explanations of procedure, of rules and law and case notes, and the gut-wrenching horrors of what the families he works with go though, or the beautiful warm memories of his father. There was never a moment I wasn't completely enthralled - nearly in tears hearing his descriptions of loss, or wanting to cry out in empathetic joy when he spoke of getting a case solved. Absolutely recommend this audiobook to anyone, true crime lover or not.

You’ll laugh and cry, and you’ll get hungry for more
I absolutely loved listening to this. Billy is such a strong and engaging writer, listening to him tell this story was a pleasure. He is thoughtful, caring, and deeply invested in changing the lives of others as well as the landscape of crime solving. The stories he shares are heart breaking, but they provide insight into his world and the true crime world in ways I hadn’t heard before. I’ve never met Billy, but this book make me proud of him. Great work, keep up the good fight. It’s chaos, be kind.

True Crime & Murderino Must Listen
While I love reading a book, there is nothing quite like having the author read it to you when it's done right and this one is! I love how honest Billy is about the frustrations, the small success rate, and how he is focusing on helping families of the "non-spotlight" cases that have been forgotten by the mainstream. There is so much to love about this book!

COULD NOT STOP
This book was so captivating I wanted to call in sick to work the morning I started listening because I didn’t want to stop. I did go to work and still managed to finish in less than 24 hours. I was brought to tears from emotion during portions of the book but overall it was excellent. Billy Jensen has a great voice for audiobooks; I highly recommend this to everyone into making this sometimes dark world, a better place.

Intriguing and Inspiring
Billy Jensen is an amazing human. Some may see his optimism for crime fighting as fanatical, but he gets real results through hard work and persistence. Incredible encouragement and guidance for others who may become the unsung heros our world needs.
Keep up the good work, Jensen!

Better suited to a Podcast
Part testimonial, part transcript of social media posts and part evangelical citizen-sleuthing crusade, this really feels like a few podcast episodes strung together. Delivered at breakneck speed by the writer without pausing for breath, it ricochets wildly from case to case and back again within each chapter, leaving this listener confused about which person or case he’s talking about much of the time. People who are fascinated by verbatim transcriptions of text messages and tweets will be thrilled with this title, because much of the book is devoted to them, as well as loads of irrelevant detail (who cares what songs Liam Gallagher sang at that concert? It Has Nothing To Do With The Story). Yes, clearly Billy is a man obsessed by his calling and he wants to share with his readers/listeners but he also needs a more ruthless editor. And he needs to slow the heck down when reading.

The best True Crime- the focus where it should be
If you like Serial, Criminal, In The Dark, and other True Crime podcasts, this book is for you. Billy Jensen, spending his own time and money, uses social media as a force for good to help find murders, find missing people, and bring justice for the families of victims.
After you listen, subscribe to his podcast with Paul Holes, Jensen and Holes: The Murder Squad and become a part of the movement of citizen detectives.

Billy Jensen has done a great job on this book! I love his ability to mix true crime with the narrative of his life. Like many true crime fans, our fascination starts early! I love hearing the stories of his Dad and of Michelle McNamara. I am half way through this book now and will add more when I finish! I look forward to more of his work!

Don’t get all the glowing reviews, boring as bust
Let me just say, I was looking forward to an interesting crime book. This is NOT that. This is the rather dry autobiographical account of a....what would I call him....of a journalist’s hunt for killers and other criminals. While his work is laudable, I mean good on you for going out there and helping out, it makes for a rather dry listen. And I mean dry! Like watching paint dry dry. And this would be OK if the writing lifted the story - it doesn’t
The only reason I can see for the glowing reviews is that maybe people know him from a TV show or a podcast - I don’t. Fans of his have clearly rated him highly, his previous accomplishments lending their glow to this work. Maybe that is why I am not as enthused as the 4,7 star rating would suggest. I am not sure.
If you are not a fan of the author, do not know him from TV or podcast, steer clear. Boring as dust. Read Christie or Slaughter is you are looking for a good story.

Great!
I’m a murderino to the core, so that helps love this book. I think my favorite part is that the author reads the book. It doesn’t happen all that much and while he is reading it helps you connect with the material because he actually lived it. I cried I think 3 times. Slightly derailed my spring cleaning but it was worth it.

Phenomenal.
I started this book the afternoon of the release, was up until midnight listening, and IMMEDIATELY started listening again upon waking up. I'm probably going to start it again soon. Poignant and personal, Billy is obviously one of the good guys he states are so few in this true crime world.

Empowering and informative
I thought I knew Billy’s story but realized after listening I only knew a fraction and I’m so glad I listened. He genuinely cares about what he does and he’s making a major difference for all of those without a voice.
