Publisher's Summary

Have you ever wanted to solve a murder? Gather the clues the police overlooked. Put together the pieces. Identify the suspect.

Journalist Billy Jensen spent 15 years investigating unsolved murders, fighting for the families of victims. Every story he wrote had one thing in common - it didn’t have an ending. The killer was still out there.

But after the sudden death of a friend, crime writer Michelle McNamara, Billy became fed up. Following a dark night, he came up with a plan. A plan to investigate past the point when the cops have given up. A plan to solve the murders himself.

In Chase Darkness with Me, you’ll ride shotgun as Billy identifies the Halloween Mask Murderer, finds a missing girl in the California Redwoods, and investigates the only other murder in New York City on 9/11. You’ll hear intimate details of the hunts for two of the most terrifying serial killers in history: his friend Michelle’s pursuit of the Golden State Killer which is chronicled in I’ll Be Gone In The Dark which Billy helped finish after Michelle’s passing, and his own quest to find the murderer of the Allenstown 4 family.

And Billy gives you the tools - and the rules - to help solve murders yourself.

Gripping, complex, unforgettable, Chase Darkness with Me is an examination of the evil forces that walk among us, illustrating a novel way to catch those killers, and a true crime narrative unlike any you’ve listened to before.

Go Behind the Scenes of Chase Darkness with Me

''Chase Darkness with Me is my journey from being a true-crime journalist who's written stories about unsolved murders — stories with no endings — and becoming so fed up that I wanted to solve these murders myself. And I came up with a system on how to do it.''

True Crime with So Much Heart

Billy Jensen's "Chase Darkness With Me" was bound to be good, considering his writing experience, but I never expected it to be so emotionally captivating. He struck a perfect balance between the clinical explanations of procedure, of rules and law and case notes, and the gut-wrenching horrors of what the families he works with go though, or the beautiful warm memories of his father. There was never a moment I wasn't completely enthralled - nearly in tears hearing his descriptions of loss, or wanting to cry out in empathetic joy when he spoke of getting a case solved. Absolutely recommend this audiobook to anyone, true crime lover or not.

You’ll laugh and cry, and you’ll get hungry for more

I absolutely loved listening to this. Billy is such a strong and engaging writer, listening to him tell this story was a pleasure. He is thoughtful, caring, and deeply invested in changing the lives of others as well as the landscape of crime solving. The stories he shares are heart breaking, but they provide insight into his world and the true crime world in ways I hadn’t heard before. I’ve never met Billy, but this book make me proud of him. Great work, keep up the good fight. It’s chaos, be kind.

True Crime & Murderino Must Listen

While I love reading a book, there is nothing quite like having the author read it to you when it's done right and this one is! I love how honest Billy is about the frustrations, the small success rate, and how he is focusing on helping families of the "non-spotlight" cases that have been forgotten by the mainstream. There is so much to love about this book!

Not what I was expecting

This was a fantastic experience.
I was hooked after the 1st chapter.
Billy Jensen has an amazing straight forward approach with this material.
The mixture of his stories, experiences/sacrifice, the basic on goings & the in-depth explanations; were gripping and made me want more.
I would recommend this book to anyone that loves/enjoys/consumes True Crime.

COULD NOT STOP

This book was so captivating I wanted to call in sick to work the morning I started listening because I didn’t want to stop. I did go to work and still managed to finish in less than 24 hours. I was brought to tears from emotion during portions of the book but overall it was excellent. Billy Jensen has a great voice for audiobooks; I highly recommend this to everyone into making this sometimes dark world, a better place.

Intriguing and Inspiring

Billy Jensen is an amazing human. Some may see his optimism for crime fighting as fanatical, but he gets real results through hard work and persistence. Incredible encouragement and guidance for others who may become the unsung heros our world needs.
Keep up the good work, Jensen!

Great!

I’m a murderino to the core, so that helps love this book. I think my favorite part is that the author reads the book. It doesn’t happen all that much and while he is reading it helps you connect with the material because he actually lived it. I cried I think 3 times. Slightly derailed my spring cleaning but it was worth it.

Empowering and informative

I thought I knew Billy’s story but realized after listening I only knew a fraction and I’m so glad I listened. He genuinely cares about what he does and he’s making a major difference for all of those without a voice.

Any True Crime Fan will love!

Billy Jensen has done a great job on this book! I love his ability to mix true crime with the narrative of his life. Like many true crime fans, our fascination starts early! I love hearing the stories of his Dad and of Michelle McNamara. I am half way through this book now and will add more when I finish! I look forward to more of his work!

Phenomenal.

I started this book the afternoon of the release, was up until midnight listening, and IMMEDIATELY started listening again upon waking up. I'm probably going to start it again soon. Poignant and personal, Billy is obviously one of the good guys he states are so few in this true crime world.

The best True Crime- the focus where it should be

If you like Serial, Criminal, In The Dark, and other True Crime podcasts, this book is for you. Billy Jensen, spending his own time and money, uses social media as a force for good to help find murders, find missing people, and bring justice for the families of victims.

After you listen, subscribe to his podcast with Paul Holes, Jensen and Holes: The Murder Squad and become a part of the movement of citizen detectives.

A Murderino’s Dream

A fascinating tale of a hardworking journalist and activist’s journey of pursuing justice for the forgotten victims of violent crime. Jensen and Kilgariff’s engrossing narration is icing on the cake. If you love true crime you’ll love this fresh take on procedural investigation.

I couldn't stop

I loved this story and couldn't stop listening to it. I'm familiar with Billy Jensen's recent podcast and was not disappointed with the book. I want to keep listening and seeing who he's able to help next.

So disappointed

Have to DNF shelve this for right now. Put off by the cutesy Karen Kilgariff intro

(“OMG I didn’t want to meet him but then I did but I thought I would hate him but OMG we totes love each other now true crime besties forever he totes listens to my podcast and you should too”)

but I forged ahead. How Jensen became interested in true crime had my attention and was truly unusual (and might be considered parental enmeshment?)...but then he goes into meeting Michelle McNamara...

And I was right back into the tone of the intro. What is it about a certain small corner of the informal true crime community (i.e., those that come at it from a paraprofessional angle) that becomes a such co-self-congratulating echo chamber?
If you are really into the work for seeking truth and helping victims, then why do you spend so much time squeeing about knowing each other and knowing other people? I stopped when he admitted that he and McNamara had a squeal fest (only a gentle paraphrasing on my part) upon getting the chance to speak to prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi in the phone. That has nothing to do with the murder victims not seeking justice.
If my murdered best friend were the subject at hand, and her case’s prosecutor (who was nothing but professional, thank God) were the celebrity they were squealing about, I would be horrified.

I may return to this book at some point. But right now I am really turned off, and there are so many more books I want to read. And I will be reading it in print if I do. Jensen’s narration sounds in part like he has a cold. I’m going to be returning it to Audible. What a disappointment.
