Publisher's Summary

“I need help.”

Those three words saved Grammy Award-winning singer Michelle Williams’s life. After decades of sweeping her anxiety and depression under the rug - even during her years in the spotlight with Destiny’s Child - Michelle found herself planning her own funeral. Realizing that she needed immediate help and could no longer battle her anxiety and depression alone, she checked herself into a treatment facility. When she came home, she was energized and determined to check in on a regular basis with herself, God, and others.

Practical, engaging, and full of wisdom, Checking In helps us understand that

  • building walls around our vulnerability can hinder our healing;
  • we need to reject the lies of anxiety and depression and replace them with the truth of God’s Word;
  • joy can be found when we release toxic thought patterns;
  • childhood wounds need to be healed;
  • freedom can be found when we forgive ourselves and others; and
  • a beautiful life comes from living honestly.

 An uplifting, behind-the-scenes look at one woman's path to healing, Checking In reminds you that you are not alone, and that God is not yet finished writing your story.

Interesting story

I will say that it’s hard to give a score on a book about someone telling their truths and story because it’s THEIR truth. I appreciate that she was able to be transparent about her mental health issues and getting help. I also liked how she referenced the Bible and God throughout the book which stays true to who she is. However, she mentions transparency and vulnerability but only gives us a little bit of what really triggered her depression and anxiety. It felt like a tease. She scratched the surface but that was it. I can respect the fact that she didn’t want to disclose certain things because she didn’t want to hurt her family or Chads family, but why introduce those things? Perhaps my expectations were too high but wanted to know more about her childhood that triggered these things. It was too much of her saying she won’t talk about this or that. Overall it was a great start.

Great and Inspirational

As someone who suffers with depression and mild anxiety it was a great to have a fellow black woman who is famous to shed light on her struggles with mental health and I really appreciate her honesty. I appreciate her talking about how Covid has affected her mental health and what she’s done to continue to succeed through this crazy time we’re going through. Literally my mental health hero.

The Phoenix

Michelle, or Tenitra, gives, and has always given, just true genuine sincerity with whatever she creates and is apart of. This book is no different. I love the growth in her character, which can not only be read and listened to here, but is heard in her beautiful music.

I’m checking in

This book spoke to me on a spiritual level. Michelle and I have a lot in common, but God’s love has kept us afloat. I would recommend this book to anyone suffering from depression, anxiety, doubts, hopelessness … to read this. Our life experiences may be different, but depression does not discriminate. What I love most about this book is how she approached the fallout of her relationship with Chad. There’s two side to every story, but she accepted full responsibility of what happened and left him with his dignity. I also love the fact that she narrated the book herself and I got to experience how funny and down to earth she is ❤️❤️❤️

Checking In, Saving Lives

The world is far from unaware about just how serious mental health and depression, anxiety, etc truly is; however it seems to get put back to the dark places nobody feels safe talking about. “I need help” is so hard for some people, myself included. This book hasn’t only allowed myself to learn, and grow as a person, but to give hope for those who also suffer in silence. To become the best you! Thank you Michelle for this book. The world needed it.

An inspirational share from Michelle Williams

I loved this book that felt more like a friendly visit. Multi- talented singer/actress Michelle Williams took time to share reflections on her life experiences with anxiety and depression in a way that grabbed my attention and held it from beginning to end. Her personal check in discussing her childhood, her career, her relationships, and her reactions and resolutions prompt the listener to do the same. I appreciate such an honest and enthusiastic attempt to encourage others to check in and think about what matters most in one's life.
