Publisher's Summary

While the United States stumbles, an award-winning foreign correspondent chronicles China’s dramatic moves to become the world’s dominant power.

As the second-largest economy, China is now extending its influence across the globe. Joanna Chiu has spent a decade tracking China’s propulsive rise, from the complicity of democratic nations, to a new colonialism coming from its multibillion-dollar “New Silk Road” initiative, to its growing sway on foreign countries and multilateral institutions.

Chiu transports listeners to protests in Hong Kong, underground churches in Beijing, and exile Uighur communities in Turkey, exposing Beijing’s use of high-tech police surveillance and aggressive human-rights violations against those who challenge its power. With increasingly close ties between authoritarian states, the new world order documented in China Unbound lays out the disturbing implications for prosperity and freedom everywhere.

"Mao still may have decades to live"

* spoilers *

"Mao still may have decades to live" (paraphrased)

This line really hit hard after recently listening to the book "Mao" and learning about the deadly reign that eventually led to millions starving .

The fear of being persecuted even once free from direct control of former and often times not even directly related citizens.

The finacial pressures on countries to take over ports while masquarading as a helping hand.

Perspective on the lucky life we live in Canada by not being born in the wrong place.

Joanna Chiu is a great journalist and this was a well worthwhile book for those seeking a view into China.

Most of this book is very good.

Very interesting to hear the perspective of a journalist who's family is from Hong Kong, speaks Mandarin, and has been to China. Quite enlightening and informative.
The latter chapters concerning the West and the United States I found to be less enlightenment and more interpretation and opinion,
Overall, I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to others.

Terrific and engaging

Not only is the content of the book insightful and nuanced, but it is beautifully written and narrated.

I really appreciate the amazing job the narrator did with the pronunciation, particularly since this book has lots of names from all over the world and many different languages.

A good book to grasp what's happening in China

Objective and entertaining at the same time. A bonus, it's written by a Canadian Journalist!
