Story
My master created me for his entertainment, leading adventurers to ruin. Betraying them at the last moment, just when their glorious victory was on hand. I have been found again by the newest member of a quartet of dungeon crawlers. Poor fool. This time will be no different. Or does it have to be? Maybe I don't need to spend eternity left in a deep, dark dungeon waiting to devour would-be heroes. Maybe, just maybe, I can take him over and use this new identity to leave and masquerade as an adventurer myself.

I had to pause this book
Party encounters a lich boss and everyone's scared there's a holy paladin in the team and he literally does nothing he actually watches other members die how is that a thing he should have at the very least should have been able to weakin a lich this is literally his job description paladins fight dark things and undead things not watch people die and not help at all I am upset! But the book is great otherwise. Travis Baldree can read a dictionary and make it sound interesting .

Kinda one dimensional characters. They concept is good, but the story is bland.
I was interested in the idea of a book from the perspective of an ever evolving protagonist. You could keep things interesting with the changes he goes through and cascading effects those bring to the game world. But, you really only see about four or five minor changes like his scales get harder or some other generic plot device to very definitely move the story in one straight line or another. By the time I reached a few hour in the book turned into a slog because of how bland the interactions were. I.e. “oh, you’re a lizard? Well, I don’t like you” moving to “Well, maybe I was a bit shallow in my judgment. Perhaps my internal struggle of the historical interaction with people similar to your appearance caused a negative superficial judgment to become a default mental focus. Oh well, guess were all good now that I don’t think that way. Huzza!” Overall, it was a great concept, maybe with some focus changes it could go awesome. Right now? It’s not good.

Baldree’s Brilliance
From the first five minutes I was sucked into the story with the excellent character voices Mr. Baldree produces. I felt like I could actually see them, simply from how detailed and varied he made each character sound. I was immersed from the beginning until the end. I will definitely be listening to EVERY audiobook I can find from this outstanding narrator!

Fantastic - bugtastic
This was a brilliant, different kind of story. It was really well written and the narration by Travis Baldree was fantastic - he was full of character and brought the book to life for me. Plus, he had to sing a lot, which was brilliant (and the songs added to the already cool world of beasts and animalistic players).
I really loved the lizard MC and the fact that he and his bug beast companion weren't OP. They had to work as a team to come up with clever tactics, rather than just running in and slashing. They also evolve, which changed the games and battles regularly and was really unique.
I also appreciate that the MC and their teammate (a thief with a giant spider) were a bit different to the norm. They were clever and even kind at times, their reactions and emotions felt genuine, and their dynamic worked well. The only niggle for me is I'd like even more of the teammate, Nux, as she's so cool and has so much potential! I was glad to see a well developed female character. Maybe we'll find out more about her in the future? Can't wait for book 2!

Great novel and narration!
I truly enjoyed this novel. Art's use of a non-traditional species for his character, as well as his choice of companion, was an interesting deviation for this genre. The author did a wonderful job of character development, for both the character inside the game and outside the game, while his world-building did a good job of providing information while also raiding questions that forwarded the story.
I look forward the next book in the series, to see what happens to both our main characters as well as the antagonists (both major and minor) set up in this novel.
If you enjoy litrpg novels, you will not be disappointed. If you enjoy fantasy, but have never read litrpg novels, give this one a shot; you will not be disappointed.
I will also add that Travis Baldree did a wonderful job with his narration. His voice was engaging and made it easy for me to keep my focus on the novel (which I sometimes struggle with on audio books).
For transparency: I was provided a free copy of this audio book for a true and accurate review of it.

Really cool game concept
Really cool game world. I like that every character gets a beast and that is a main part of the game. The game world is very well thought out and seems like it would be a legitimately fun game. The characters are well established through their interaction in the book. Travis Baldree does an awesome job with his narration. That guy can sing, too!

those negative reviews are just grains of salt
I saw someone complain about racism. Apparently the species that he plays as was very invasive. Due to potential genocide of their species they started war to increase their land so that they may better survive. The other races that survived have grudges. So I wouldn't say racist per se. but they are universally hated due to the actions of their species. like this would be more on the extreme side but you could compare it to why people hate Nazis. They did a lot of bad things. And now everyone talks crap about them. Are you telling me that everyone that hates a Nazi is a racist? Anyway whoever wrote the review I think is pretty dumb.
Two main characters get along extremely well at one point. There's some personal growth there as well.
The only thing that's got me laughing consistently is I think his characters are all murder hobos. Everyone has got to kill everything. but I think some people wouldn't enjoy that.
overall the narrator did a fantastic job bringing the story to life so no personal issues there. like I have nothing to critique on that.
The story overall was like a 7 out of 10 for me. Progress is quick enough for my taste. Story was a bit fresh as it used something that wasn't human for a change.
props of the author for not making alignment black or white.
I probably wouldn't re-listen to this book but if he came out with a second I'd probably spend the credit to snagit.
Mr writer I would like lore. As a dungeon master I get what you did I just want to know the reason that they're so disliked. like what exactly did they do in the war that generated universal hate. and enough reason for the majority of the population that plays this game to not want to select the race due to the high social penalties that are involved with playing with it?

the book was great and used many aspects that are not used in other litrpg. I lived how there was bonded pets and how the main character was an unusual race. the book also suprised me on how it ended as well.
