About this listen

Welcome to the city of Angelthene. We hope you survive.

Loren Calla has only ever been ordinary. As a human struggling to survive in a city that caters to the needs of vampires, werewolves, witches, and other supernatural creatures, she always assumed her life would remain simple, predictable, and as safe as her world would allow.

Until she barely escapes abduction at the hands of Darkslayers—supernatural bounty hunters that possess the Sight, a magical tracking ability that allows them to see a person's aura—and one of her friends is taken in her place. The abductors are demanding a ransom: Loren's life in exchange for her friend's safe return. Loren will do whatever it takes to get her friend back—even if it means accepting help from Darien Cassel, the leader of the Seven Devils, the most feared Darkslaying circle in the city.

Darien specializes in tracking down demons and criminals that are better off dead than alive, so when he takes a job to track down Loren and finds out she is human—and couldn't hurt a fly if her life depended on it—he decides to protect her instead of turn her in for a reward. As much as Loren doesn't want to admit it, Darien is her best and only chance at finding her friend alive, if she can somehow manage to get along with him—and not fall head-over-heels in love with him in the process, which is far easier said than done.

When more women start disappearing, and some of them slowly turn up dead, Loren and Darien's search for answers takes them deep into Angelthene's corrupt underbelly, where they discover a dark secret that threatens to unravel their world. And when tragedy strikes, Loren learns that love can make an ordinary person do extraordinary things.

From the author of Dreams of Ice and Iron comes a new fantasy romance perfect for fans of Sarah J Maas, Ilona Andrews, and Cassandra Clare.

Passionate Urban Romantasy

A passionate urban fantasy set in an immersive world with action and found family elements, CITY OF GODS AND MONSTERS is perfect for anyone craving an urban romantasy.

The core story follows a young human woman named Loren whose life is turned upside down when her friend is kidnapped. The price of her return is the true target: Loren herself. Enter elite warrior Darien, the bodyguard who takes her into his care on seeing how vulnerable she is.

Loren and Darien are the epitome of opposites attract. Not only are they virtually nothing alike in terms of personality, but the attraction between them is there from the start. I enjoyed their banter, though I found Loren’s to be a little too naïve and Darien to be too overprotective. They’re not badly written (the prose itself is solid), I just didn’t connect with them as much as I wanted.

The plot has some compelling elements, though it primarily focused on the romance and found family aspects. I would’ve liked a little more focus on the plot over the romance, but it was fun to see these two attempt to resist each other.

Fans of CRESCENT CITY will enjoy this setting. It’s easy to understand, has plenty of layers, and you can feel the danger when the characters are alone on the streets.

Edwards’ prose has a nice, smooth flow to it. The dialogue is natural well structured, which allows for greater immersion.

All told, if you are looking for a new romantasy that feels similar but different from CRESCENT CITY, then CITY OF GODS AND MONSTERS is likely for you!

Good story, miss on narration

I enjoyed the story, lots of detail and overall a good plot. The narration was hard to listen to unfortunately . Did not do the characters justice and made them seem very immature. Would probably recommend reading over listening.

Great story, narration inconsistent

Great story, ate it up! The writing is not the most elevated but it gets the job done. However, where I struggled was the narration. The FMC’s name was pronounced Lauren and Lorraine randomly throughout the books. The FMC is also interpreted so meekly sometimes, it doesn’t feel that it matches the writing. Will definitely read the next books ofc

Awful narrators

The narrators were horrible, painful to listen to. I noticed book 2 has the same so I will be ordering it, it takes away from the writing

Enjoyed the story!

Hit all the tropes that keep me interested! I enjoyed the pacing of the romance - slow slow burn! A lot of the main conflicts/peaks of the story were kinda brushed over and given quick fixes, but that’s just cause I was invested in the story!

I didn’t mind the narration! I find a lot of narrators make FMC super bratty sounding, but this wasn’t too bad.

Overall a great experience and I’m definitely gonna read the series!

Big miss on narration

I had to stop listening to the audio of this book and revert to reading it. The choice of narrators was a big miss in my opinion. Dual narration is a great thing when they both get to voice their respective characters throughout the book. The female narrator and male using an opposite voice for parts completely made me cringe and took me out of the story which is unfortunate because it’s such a good book! I hope this gets resolved for book two as it ruined the experience for me personally.

The entire story

I don’t write reviews but I felt the need to write one after reading the pre existing reviews. I don’t know if the narrators have been recently changed ? But I’m an audiobook gal to my core - almost didn’t get this book cause of the reviews but bit the bullet. pleasantly surprised cause I think they did very well reading this book! I’m so confused by the reviews

Great story

Disliked the lack of dual narrative. The voices used for both narratives was awful for when the man spoke for the woman’s narrative and the woman spoke for the man’s. Struggled to get through listening to it.
