Publisher's Summary

Best-selling author Rick Riordan presents City of the Plague God, an adventure based on ancient Mesopotamian mythology written by Sarwat Chadda, author of the Ash Mistry series. Characters from the Epic of Gilgamesh populate this high-stakes contemporary adventure in which all of Manhattan is threatened by the ancient god of plagues.

Thirteen-year-old Sik wants a simple life going to school and helping at his parents' deli in the evenings. But all that is blown to smithereens when Nergal comes looking for him, thinking that Sik holds the secret to eternal life. Turns out Sik is immortal but doesn't know it, and that's about to get him and the entire city into deep, deep trouble.

Sik's not in this alone. He's got Belet, the adopted daughter of Ishtar, the goddess of love and war, on his side, and a former hero named Gilgamesh, who has taken up gardening in Central Park. Now all they have to do is retrieve the Flower of Immortality to save Manhattan from being wiped out by disease. To succeed, they'll have to conquer sly demons, treacherous gods, and their own darkest nightmares

Representation matters

I listened to this story as a non Muslim person who has a few Muslim friends, somewhat unfamiliar with the mythology. It was so gripping and relatable. I learned a lot, and the characters were endearing. I can just imagine how much more impactful this will be for a young Muslim reader

Well done , one of the best in RR presents

I look forward to a sequel. I was hoping fir more of a focus on the epic of Gilgamesh or the religion but it did not hurt the story. I recommend this book

Shine a Light on the Underdog!

Honestly it took me a while to pick up and read this book; only because it was about the timing and what felt right to read. With that being said this story was about saving the people he cares about and is willing to fight an enemy far greater than he is. I love the characters and how each of them dealt with different struggles and aimed to solve them in the best way. It was a unique way to step into the world where Mesopotamia mythology existed. It drew me in from the very first page. Honestly I can’t wait to read book 2 of this series.

Excellent adventure!

We loved this story. It was pretty dark but that especially appealed to my ten year old. I appreciated learning about the Sumerians and revisiting the epic of Gilgamesh that I read back in high school.
