INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER

A brilliantly plotted psychological crime novel about a missing child and the scandal that erupts in the aftermath with a shocking twist

They know who did it. Perhaps not consciously. Perhaps not yet. But they know.

When eight-year-old Daisy Mason vanishes from her family’s Oxford home during a costume party, Detective Inspector Adam Fawley knows that nine times out of ten, the offender is someone close to home. And Daisy’s family is certainly strange—her mother is obsessed with keeping up appearances, while her father is cold and defensive under questioning. And then there’s Daisy’s little brother, so withdrawn and uncommunicative . . .

DI Fawley works against the clock to find any trace of the little girl, but it’s as if she disappeared into thin air—no one saw anything; no one knows anything. But everyone has an opinion, and everyone, it seems, has a secret to conceal.

With a story that feels all too real, Close to Home is the best kind of suspense—the kind that sends chills down your spine and keeps you up late at night, thrilled and terrified.

Disappointing

The narrator was great but several plots went nowhere. Continued social media posts were annoying and the ending was rather unbelievable..

Really satisfying

I so enjoyed this book. Well written, terrific narration and the plot development and characters very engaging. It’s twisty and turny enough to keep you guessing, the end was brilliant. Highly recommended.

Intelligent and Suspenseful Police Procedural

I can't say enough how much I liked this first of Cara Hunter's DI Adam Fawley series. Close to Home is a great book and a really enjoyable read. I love the characters- they are realistic and not cookie-cutter cops. You can tell that these people have heart when doing their jobs. I liked the 'mixed media' style with emails and news stories inserted throughout. Unlike other reviewer(s) I didn't find the 'comments' on news stories very tedious. It's realistic and adds to the intrigue, and the Twitter campaign becomes part of the story. The central mystery kept me listening late into the night. Details brought up throughout the book all link together as the book comes to its conclusion! The narration is spot-on and realistic. I think this is an excellent book in a great series and I highly recommend.

Too much social media!!

The amount of social media in this book makes for a dull audio book. For example, the reader repeats every element of each twitter post and there are a lot of twitter posts. Also, FB posts and regular media. Probably makes for a dull book to read as well. Omit all that and it might be a decent book.

Kept me interested the whole way through

I really enjoyed this book. The story was great. There were lots of unexpected twists and turns. Right from the beginning I was hooked. I loved that there were multiple narrators and that they spoke the lines without saying "he said.. she said." The main narrator in particular was great. I have to say one negative thing, however - something another reviewer noted. There was WAY TOO much social media. They literally spoke the Tweets word for word, punctuation and all, complete with "hashtag, underscore..." And it went on and on. It was probably fine for the written book, but excruciating to have to listen to, and it added nothing to the story.

Twists and turns

Every time I thought I figured it out, a new twist changed the direction. The best ending.

Exceptional Plot and Characters

I loved this book so much that I ordered the next book in the series immediately. What I most enjoyed was that I was kept guessing until the end. The plot has constant twists and turns and the characters lifted the book from a one-dimensional mystery to a multidimensional landscape.

My kind of mystery/police procedural!

So glad I discovered this writer. Will purchase more books by her. The narrators did a great job, and we're well matched to the characters and content.

Fast paced procedural w/o romantic interludes

Well the story line wasn't completely unique, but it's well written with great character development! The author gives you just enough information to make your own inferences, but nothing unequivocal. I really enjoyed this one and confidently RECOMMEND.

Hooked Me

A plot with many angles, smart and likable investigators, and an ending I didn’t see coming.
