Publisher's Summary

Bram Stoker Award Winner for Superior Achievement in a Young Adult Novel

In Adam Cesare’s terrifying young adult debut, Quinn Maybrook finds herself caught in a battle between old and new, tradition and progress - that just may cost her life.

Quinn Maybrook and her father have moved to tiny, boring Kettle Springs, to find a fresh start. But what they don’t know is that ever since the Baypen Corn Syrup Factory shut down, Kettle Springs has cracked in half.

On one side are the adults, who are desperate to make Kettle Springs great again, and on the other are the kids, who want to have fun, make prank videos, and get out of Kettle Springs as quick as they can.

Kettle Springs is caught in a battle between old and new, tradition and progress. It’s a fight that looks like it will destroy the town. Until Frendo, the Baypen mascot, a creepy clown in a pork-pie hat, goes homicidal and decides that the only way for Kettle Springs to grow back is to cull the rotten crop of kids who live there now.

Overhyped

My first spooky book for spooky month 2023! It was good! It wasn’t great.

This is the story of Quinn and her father (a doctor) who have moved from the big city to a small town after her mother’s death. The story moves quickly. First we have the “fitting in on the first day of school” drama, then we meet the crop of existing high schoolers. They have a reputation and the adults in town don’t like them. Classic kids vs adults storyline. Frendo, the town mascot is a creepy clown. Who thought this was a good idea? Anyway, Frendo seems to have a grudge. The last half of the book is classic horror gore.

The story is ‘80s slasher film-worthy. The setting - a small town surrounded by cornfields- is perfect for this horror.

I liked the story and the characters were well written. There was so much telling and so little showing that it was much less satisfying than it could have been. We’re not in the story, we’re watching the story.

Anyway, overall, a decent beginning to the month. I’ve wanted to read this one for a while.

Action packed creepiness

An excellent slasher novel well worthy of a sequel. can't wait for book number two.

Fun teen slasher

This book is great to listen too if you just want to turn your brain off and relax. It’s quick and fun. I finished it in 2 days. Some reviews say it’s “woke” and political and I guess it is but not as bad as the reviews say. Worth a listen for sure. The narrator isn’t the worst I’ve heard but she isn’t great. Some of the accents and voices aren’t pleasant. Some of the voice acting when reading death scenes reminded me of Amber heard trying to conjure up tears when she was on the stand.
