Publisher's Summary

Exclusive to Audible! Listen to a discussion between the author and the narrator of Coffin Road at the end of this recording.

A man stands bewildered on a deserted beach on the Hebridean Isle of Harris. He cannot remember who he is. The only clue to his identity is a folded map of a path named the Coffin Road. He does not know where this search will take him.

A detective from Lewis sits aboard a boat, filled with doubt. DS George Gunn knows that a bludgeoned corpse has been discovered on a remote rock 20 miles offshore. He does not know if he has what it takes to uncover how and why.

A teenage girl lies in her Edinburgh bedroom, desperate to discover the truth about her scientist father’s suicide. Two years on, Karen Fleming still cannot accept that he would wilfully abandon her. She does not yet know his secret.

Coffin Road follows three perilous journeys towards one shocking truth - and the realisation that ignorance can kill us.

Very enjoyable mystery

I am very impressed by this book, my first by Peter May. His writing is very good with excellent descriptive passages about the landscape and weather elements; makes you want to visit the Hebrides, especially the Isle of Harris. I also enjoyed how the author weaved the latest research on bee colony collapse into the story. Very nicely done!

The narration by Peter Forbes is excellent.

Great Book, Thoughtful & Entertaining

I loved this book. I listen to a lot of murder mystery detective style novels, and this one exceeded my expectations. Peter May has given life to the characters in such a real way, something I find missing or forced in a lot of books of this style. Highly recommend, best while working on a puzzle and drinking coffee :)

The descriptions that he uses in his books keep you on the edge of your seat the whole time

I love his writing style and the narration by Peter Forbes just makes the writing style pop. I actually gasped a few times out loud while listening to the coffin road. Laughed out loud a few times as well.

Another good Harris yarn

Contains spoilers
May let's rip with another gripping (at least for the first half) Hebridean story , not really related to the trilogy with the exception of George Gunn as the local cop (how many times is his widow's peak hair and shiny face described?). I liked the switch between first and third person narrators. Some of the old tropes are here; knife wielding assassins in dark rooms, men fighting and falling over and having all the breath forced out of their lungs (seems to use the same descriptors for all fights), bad guy shot by the other bad guy, bad sex writing etc.
I found Neil's/Prof Fleming's memory recovery a bit contrived, as if memory is an on/off switch. The psychiatrist's theory about why he lost it was quite convincing and seemed medically correct. The Harrisons were so obviously up to no good.
Another reviewer asked why the Mum did not recognize Neil. I was fooled by that for a while until I realized that was why May had set up the parallel death of the yachtsman whose ID Neil had taken over for the purposes of his sabbatical. The mother and daughter in Edinburgh were those of the real Neil McLean and not Karen and Prof Fleming's wife, hence their reaction. All of Prof Fleming's actions to find out who he was were based on his mistaken belief, while in amnesic switch on mode, that he was actually Neil McLean.
Once again a fair to middling plot is brought to life by the amazing Peter Forbes, I doubt I could read these books to myself as novels but this narrator is the star for me and never puts a foot, or accent, wrong.
