Publisher's Summary

Still don't know what cognitive behavioral therapy is?

When suffering from anxiety, depression, and panic attacks, our lives can feel as if hampered, blocked, and even like we are at a dead end or running around in circles. These feelings can be magnified by the idea that we are alone, and there is no way out. We do not know which way to turn. It is as if all of the road signs are written in a foreign language, and we have no way to interpret them.

Everyone around us seems to be moving ahead, even rushing toward great destinations, taking the correct turns and living their lives exactly how and where they want to be, but here we are bogged down and burdened, stuck in one spot. So, we stop and stare blindly at the path that is unknown in front of us, not sure of exactly how to move from the place where we are and onto a better, happier position that allows us to excel.

In reality, the desire to move on to a more positive situation is the first step in making one’s way to finding a beneficial coping mechanism. The very recognition of the need to be somewhere else can be the beginning of a way to find help that we are searching for. Acknowledging the fact that you have the need to change your view is the starting point to move forward. We might not see the best way to change our mental state and thoughts at first, however with therapies and different coping strategies, it allows us to achieve our goals. The place we want to be might seem a long way off, but recognizing the desire to go there can be that first step to getting us started on the right path.

So, the question is, where are you right now? What are your thoughts about your current position and where is it you want to go? Some synonyms for the word thinking are perception, discernment, awareness, enlightenment, and cognition.  The word cognition can be defined very simply as the process of thinking. It is the ability to identify what we know, to understand what we think, and to discern how our own knowledge affects us.

If we are unaware of what we think then we are unaware of why we feel and, in turn, we are unaware of why we act. So, if we are acting or behaving in ways that are not normal then, evidently, the way we are thinking and feeling are not normal, either. We need to be able to know what we are thinking. Knowing what you are thinking, knowing if the way you are thinking is abnormal, irrational, or negative is the foundation of cognitive behavioral therapy.
