Publisher's Summary

In 1931, a young American named Victor Herman accompanied his parents to the Soviet Union, where his father was to set up a Ford Motor Company plant. In 1938, he was inexplicably thrown into a Soviet prison. It was 45 years before he was able to return to America.

His was a common nightmare during the Stalin years. Those who survived imprisonment and torture were either sent north to hard labor in the icy forests and mines or into exile. Victor Herman was one of the few who survived. During his life in and out of Russian prisons, he fell in love with a Russian gymnast, who followed him into exile. She lived with him and their child for a year in Siberia in a cave chopped out of ice. Theirs was a romance destined to thrive even under desperate conditions.

What the critics say

"Herman's tale is awful and heartening: awful that anyone should have undergone such things; heartening that he did and endured. This book is sure to take its place alongside Solzhenitsyn and Kessler's Darkness at Noon." (William F. Buckley Jr.)

A remarkable memoir

How this man left the USA as a teenager and was only able to return after he turned 60 is beyond belief, yet it is very real. What happened to him in Russia is heartbreaking and tragic, yet he married for love, and never gave up his dream to return home. It is fortunate that his wife and children were able to follow him. Very well written and narrated.

What an experience

This book is may change your life in a way, or may change the way you think about life events. The plot is very well written and Narrator’s vice made it easy to listen to even though, there were few minor mispronunciations in Russian language.
I would love to see more books like this one added into school curriculums for our future generation to learn from. I absolutely admire the author and his courage to share his rough experience- it takes character. I would highly recommend this book even though it describes abusive scenes- your mind can handle this! Give it a go! Thank you Audible.

Great Biography

This is an amazing book. I read this book at least one a year. Something within it causes me to reassess how I look at life and what has been given to me.

Excetionally dramatic personal story

I believe that it is not possible to understand Russian people without learning their despotic history. Anyone with couriosity about Russia must listen naration of this memoir, which, by the way, is very well written.

Must read story

So so so powerful story. Such an important story and book everyone needs to read. Please pass this on to your children, Although, I’d suggest the reader be at least 16-18 yrs old before they do.
