About this listen

No. 1 bestselling author Conn Iggulden takes on the story of the mighty Kublai Khan. An epic tale of a great and heroic mind; his action-packed rule; and how in conquering one-fifth of the world’s inhabited land, he changed the course of history forever.

A scholar who conquered an empire larger than those of Alexander or Caesar.

A warrior who would rule a fifth of the world with strength and wisdom.

A man who betrayed a brother to protect a nation.

From a young scholar to one of history’s most powerful warriors, Conqueror tells the story of Kublai Khan – an extraordinary man who should be remembered alongside Julius Caesar, Alexander the Great and Napoleon Bonaparte as one of the greatest conquerors the world has ever known.

It should have been a golden age, with an empire to dwarf the lands won by the mighty Genghis Khan. Instead, the vast Mongol nation is slowly losing ground, swallowed whole by their most ancient enemy. A new generation has arisen, yet the long shadow of the Great Khan still hangs over them all …

Kublai dreams of an empire stretching from sea to sea. But to see it built, this scholar must first learn the art of war. He must take his nation’s warriors to the ends of the known world. And when he is weary, when he is wounded, he must face his own brothers in bloody civil war.

This book as the last in the series had a bit of a slower start, iggulden went a little deeper into the politics in the beginning, but I stuck it out and I'm glad I did, a fantastic read!

Slow start, GREAT finish

I can't get enough of this series. Having read the whole series on paperback it was a lot of fun to listen to on audible. I HIGHLY recommend this series. you can't go wrong.

The book is alright story wise and the narrators performance is overall very good with excellent acting and a range of voices, but I had a major problem with his volume, especially when he is voicing women or children, he tends to whisper. Kind of annoying to have to change the volume all the time as other parts are very loud.

Good but too much variance in volume

A fabulous read. I learned a lot and enjoyed the experience thoroughly. Thank you to both the author and audibles!

I chose this narrator because I like the actor and I thought he sounded nicer than the american voice. Big mistake! Other reviewers got it right: The volume varied so much that I was constantly changing it. And his growl voice sounded like he ate dry sand and was trying hard not to choke. One minute he was whispering so that you can't hear what he's saying and the next, he was yelling at the top of his lungs. Professional narrators know how to whisper and yell without changing the volume of their voice, he does not. I most likely won't listen to him again.
I thought this was the weakest book in the series. It starts off really slow and builds up in the last 90% of the book. However, it wasn't as compelling as the other books. Books 1-4 kept my attention taut and I couldn't wait til I could get back to listen to them. With this book, I got bored and listened to other books in between. And it was so easy to put it down (even in the last hour) to go do something else. What a struggle to finish the book. I couldn't DNF it after I had invested so much into whole series. If only the author finished his series like he started out, I would've deemed the saga 5/5 stars. The subjects were very interesting and I had looked forward to this book... what a shame.

Avoid this narrator

This series keeps switching narrators. It isn’t a big deal, although it can be annoying that they have entirely different pronunciations for names of characters and such.

This narrator was not great though. He whispers a lot of dialog, and then switches to yelling sometimes. It makes it difficult to choose a volume setting.

Decent story, poor narration
