Publisher's Summary

Answers to who killed her family. A trial to death. Is the truth worth the risk?

Master Mage Rielle is counting the months to her wedding when an unexpected invitation arrives from Magehold - to compete for magister. The magister’s mantle has been her dream for over a decade, but rumors accuse Magehold of shadowy deeds, among them killing families to collect promising young novices.

Piracy has been rampant along the Emaurrian coast, and Jon has his hands full with the immortals attacking, his forces spread too thin to handle it all. When Magehold announces that the winner of the Magister Trials will be granted one boon, Rielle is determined to ask for an end to the piracy that threatens so many others and harmed her own family and to investigate whether Magehold was responsible. But when she arrives, she learns that the trials have only one rule: survive.

Magehold could easily stamp out the piracy claiming countless lives, and if she wins the trials, Rielle could see it done. But with the other mages competing to kill, strangers hunting her in the shadows, and mysterious factions working behind the scenes, trying to win the test could mean the end of her life.

Will the trials give her the answers she seeks and the aid Emaurria sorely needs, or will they be her end?

Enter Blade and Rose and dive into a medieval world sensual and dark, full of magic and greed, love and blades, where factions vie for influence and there are no easy choices.

Another great book!

I'm obsessed with this series. I don't even know how I found it and it was sitting in my wish list forever before I finally read it. This book was less painful than the last one. I almost couldn't continue because the last book was so heartbreaking. In this book, Rielle finds herself a little bit more and some of her grief dicipates. I do kind of love Brennen because he loves Rielle so much and I'm so rooting for her. Spoilers: I do have to say, I didn't like how much Olivia became attracted to Jon. That just felt wrong and unlike Olivia. She wouldn't fall for her best friend former lover, or her former lovers son. You don't date/hook up with your best freinds ex, you just don't. At one point, when I thought Jon and Olivia were going to hook up, I decided I could read no more and I would have to stop, but they didn't. Between that and Brennens baby on the way, Rielle was just in for more pain. Hasn't she had enough? When does something good get to happen for Rielle? I still absolutely loved the book and feel like I know the characters inside and out. I'm off to read the next one.

Incredible series

Gosh, this series is fantastic! The writing is truly delightful, and is so creative and unique. The narration is effortless, and I am so impressed with Amanda Leigh Cobb's ability to transcend between characters and situations. Each character seems to come to life on the page. The setting is incredible, the word building is on point, and the attention to detail is beautifully done. This book truly has it all, including a battle for redemption, a gripping tale of self discovery, and ongoing ups and downs I think this series is so underrated, and I highly recommend, but start from the beginning!

Third in series - great series

This one continues where the 2nd book left off and continues the tale of Emouria and it's citizens from Rielle, Brennan, Jon and all others to include some new characters from the previous book and new ones into this book! We follow the adventures of Rielle and Brennan as they start their engagement. Jon and his court as they look to the Grand Divineness for help, Lee and the light Elves and their quests et al. A fabulous tale continuing what was started and to be continued in others - which I eagerly anticipate The narrator, as previously mentioned is very good and covers the story well!! A great listen!

cliffhanger

Book 3 in Miranda Honfleur's Blade and Rose series - Rielle's story continues with incredible characters and a read / listen that will provide twist and turns you won't see coming. I am completely addicted to this series. Honfleur writes in a way that grabs the reader / listeners attention and won't let go with exciting storylines and engaging characters that you love to love. The only thing is the cliffhangers - they're killing me (and IDK if it's in a good way or not). This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

Daring Adventure

I greatly enjoyed Court of Shadows. This story takes many turns and although I would love to see all the characters I’ve grown attached to find happiness I find myself rooting for some more than others. I truly love how well this author can shift from each set of characters. Taking individual stories and weaving them together to create one magnificent tale where all of their lives are interconnected. I also really love how each character is multifaceted and has depth. Through out their journeys they continuously grow and change. Can’t wait to dive into Queen of the Shining Sea.

An epic in the making!

My fourth read from author Miranda Honfleur, this is an epic in the making! Tolkienesque fantasy with a dash of romance. Well-written, outstanding character developed in great detail with an unseen surprise thrown in near the end of this book. No spoilers from me, this is a must-read for fantasy lovers! Narrator Amanda Leigh Cobb's narration adds to the book's enjoyment. Owning both the Audible & Kindle editions I was able to follow along while being read to. I can’t wait for the next book in the series, Queen of the Shining Sea! (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

Is the truth going to be revealed?

'Court of shadows' by Miranda Honfleur is the story of Rielle. 'Court of shadows' is the third book in the series. This series has 5 books, but later (2020) book 6 will be released. There are also 2 novella's. This audiobook is about 18 hours and 51 minutes long. . 'Court of Shadows' is my favorite book in the series. Rielle and Brennan are good together. To be honest I would like it more if Jon and Rielle were together. I think that they are match made from heaven. I was really worried at the end of By 'Dark Deeds' about where this was going. Luckily that wasn't needed. The author 'Miranda Honfleur' never strayed from the truth of the characters built in the previous two books. Not once did 'Miranda Honfleur' bend the characters to the will of the story simply because she wanted something to happen. It just felt honest. Every twist and turn for each character was earned and the entire time I felt like the story was moving along its destined course. This book continues to build on the characters as they try, not always successfully, to be better versions of themselves. I love Brennan in this story as he is the best person he can be When it involves people or things he cares about, which is so keeping with his character. Jon is trying to so hard to be what everyone needs him to be, But remaining unflinchingly dedicated to his personal moral compass. I love that he makes mistakes, but becomes better because of what he learns. Jon is my favorite lover for Rielle. He is so strong without alienating those around him. But I totally love Leigh Calvin too with his elven lover. I like female characters even more if they don't have to do everything by themselves, or have to be uncompromising to feel strong. Rielle has flaws, and feelings, and traumas. But still works with those around her to strengthen them and take strength from them. She's not too weak to save herself and not too stubborn to need to be saved sometimes. This series has been one of my biggest favorites I've read this year. 'Blade and rose' has complex characters, multiple POVs (what I like very much. This is giving the story more depth.), passionate romance, heartwarming friendships and above all epic world-building. I would definitely recommend this book if you like romance, magic and an action packed adventure across the kingdom you will enjoy this book. It's a good continuation for 'Blade and Rose' series. I'm very much looking forward to sailing on into 'Queen of the Shining Sea'. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher for an honest review.

Boys have cooties.

Sometimes, I just want Rielle to stab Brennan. In the butt. With an ice spike. I don’t care that magic doesn’t work on him, he just needs something stronger than a kick. This whole book was Rielle in danger and Brennan trying to “domesticate” her. I understand where he’s coming from, he’s found someone amazing, and he’s terrified that he’ll lose her. Putting her in a pretty little cage is not the way to accomplish that though. My only complaint is that I would have liked to have seen more building about the mage trials than all the back and forth with Rielle and Brennan. I know love makes you do stupid things but their relationship is toxic. Brennan is trying, but he is fundamentally broken. He is insecure and jealous and after the way he has treated her, he should be. He is on the road to redemption, but it’s a long road. And uphill. With a bag of bricks on his back. I loved the way that it ended. There is some hope left. The addition of the new characters in this book were great and I love the immortal creatures. Leigh meeting with the covens lent a powerful reminder that the world keeps turning even though our main characters are tied up in politics. This was definitely a book where I kept wanting to read it but didn’t want it to end. At random points in real life, I would just think of certain words from the story and be instantly transported back. Can’t wait to start on the next installment of my new favorite series.
