Publisher's Summary

Discover the origins of the classic rivalry between Spike and Vicious amongst the dark underbelly of Mars, 2061, in this prequel novel to the upcoming Netflix series Cowboy Bebop.

The year is 2061. The Red Dragon Crime Syndicate is king, and for all those lucky enough to be members of this crime family, life is damn good.

Well, not for everyone.... For two entry-level gangsters in Tharsis City, Mars, life in the Syndicate isn’t quite all guns and glamour. That’s right. Long before they were mortal enemies, Spike Spiegel and Vicious were just two friends clawing their way up the crime ladder and trying to have a little fun while doing it.

But when an opportunity to pull a job for their boss arises, it’s make-or-break time. Literally. All they have to do is deliver a suitcase. How hard could it be?

You ready for some history tellin'...space cowboy?

I hope everything else Cowboy Bebop is as good!?

I have not seen the anime, or Netflix series, but I loved this audiobook. Performance and story were awesome. I wish there were more audiobooks, but I guess it's off to the shows now!!

Better Than I Expected!

I had watched the first episode of Cowboy Bebop on Netflix then found this free audible book. It gives a great background to the main character and world building. I really enjoyed the narrator and will look for his other work.

I think it's a fun/gritty buddy story whether you've watched the Netflix show or not.

Fills in Back Story

Interesting story that explains much from the Netflix series with first meeting of many of the characters.

A decent enough variation

Whereas the 26 episode TV anime series of "Cowboy Bebop" is one of my all time favourite TV series, and the Netflix adaptation was disappointing with too many pointless changes, "A Syndicate Story" presents the missing story of where the main character "Spike" was a friend of series villain "Vicious" in the Red Dragon crime syndicate. The characters in the story are different than in the anime series, making Spike a character who is frequently making wisecracks, and Vicious a character who goes into a blind rage and regrets that part of himself, instead of the cold blooded psychopath that he is in the anime. (A person's personality can change over time, but their core is far less likely to do so.) And while the series takes place on Mars, a similar story could be told with minimal changes in a modern day American city.

In short, don't be put off by the story's association with the Netflix take on the classic, and don't expect the style and charm of the anime series either. This story stands on its own, independent of either series, being more of a different story than a side story.

Sadness

Loved the show on Netflix and this book. The Narrating by Pun Bandhu was genius and the writing by Sean Cummings exquisite. It's such a bummer that the adaptation of animated Cowbow Beebop will not cuntinue..

Satisfying Cowboy Bebop Origin Story

Entertaining, if not predictable, Cowboy Bebop original story. Centered entirely on Fearless/Spike and Vicious. Fun to see their relationship back when they were BFFs.

Appears to be in its own cannon as there are some small things that don't line up with the original anime, nor with the Netflix live-action show.

About what I expected.

Naration was great. The story was ok. Lots of action, not much depth. A bit hard to follow at times, probably because I started to lose interest about half way through.
