Story
Jacqueline Keys was ostracized from her small hometown of Pine Springs, Texas, when she was 17, sent away because she was gay. Fifteen years later - long after she'd hitch-hiked to Los Angeles, put herself through college, and had written her first best seller - Jacqueline is persuaded to go back to the tiny town of Pine Springs after her father's death. The quick trip she'd envisioned for the funeral turns into weeks as she learns her father's business is suddenly hers to manage. And she is also again face-to-face with the woman who, as a teen, had been Jackie's first crush.

Publisher's Summary
Kate Winters, author of the popular mystery series The Masters, finds herself in a bit of a predicament - she doesn't seem to be able to write any longer. So when her old friend and wealthy widow Brenda invites Kate to spend the summer in Coyote, New Mexico, Kate decides that a summer in Coyote might be just what she needs to clear her writer's block.
Leaving behind the Dallas heat - and her girlfriend, Robin - Kate retreats to the high mountain desert and soon finds herself surrounded by Brenda's eccentric friends and artists. But it's the local sheriff, Lee Foxx, who soon grabs her attention. It doesn't take long for Kate to discover that Lee has a penchant for dating the young tourists that flock to the river canyon each summer - and that Lee has no intention of ever settling down.
Then an unexpected visit by Kate's girlfriend sends everyone scrambling. Torn between safety and desire, Kate has no idea which way to turn. And as for Lee - she can't quite believe that she's actually fallen in love...for the very first time in her life.

A good love story, it will make you smile
First, I had no problem listening to this book but Abby Craden has a habit or talent for reading Gerri Hill stories. While the story is not a long one, it covers most of those important things that make a good love Story. This is about two people who do not appear lonely dealing with lives that have really become boring, not pointless, but still they are sad and empty.
It is funny how when you meet someone you need in your life, the initial meeting does not always go well. This is one of those. We see as feelings grow how their challenges seemingly grow as well. the story comes to its conclusion a little abruptly. There are some scenes and parts that were a little over done and Kate's skepticism got a little annoying, I think the subject got a bit out of hand. something Gerri Hill really does well in particular is writing in the intimate scenes. she always does them very well and Abby reads them with the passion they were meant to have but if you were to not go into such detail, the story would not lose much of anything that makes it great. my oy real complaint is how Lee comes to think the worst about Kate and goes after her. I don't see how this came about. I think a bit more information an extra paragraph could have fixed it. If this was not so I would give this story full marks. As it is I'm going to listen to it again tonight and be happy that teams like Gerri Hill and Abby Craden exist and are so very good at what they do.

Not my favorite
I can never resist a Gerri Hill-Abby Craden combo and I preordered this as soon as I could. I loved the performance and even the premise of the story in general was good. It was the character development and the forced angst that put me off. I mean, how Kate could think that she still meant nothing to Lee after each profound encounter between them got a little old.
Also, the ending felt rushed and unresolved. When I saw that there were only 5 minutes left and they hadn’t even talked about their relationship yet, I was a little disappointed.
All that being said, I don’t regret getting this one. It was entertaining and fun in places.

Made me want to move to Coyote!
The perfect book for girls who love girls and nature. I identified with the characters. The voice acting was unusually well-done. The setting is so well described and inviting that I even looked to see if Coyote is a real place. The story is great and everything you would want to happen... you’ll just have to read and find out!

Better than I I thought it would be
When i search for books to listen to, i search for Abby Craden… she reads a lot of books by Gerri Hill. I do enjoy her stories, but they always seem to end so abruptly. I don’t know if that’s a bad thing.

ok
The writing was good. Story line was OK. MC Lee initially got on my nerves and made me kinda sick with her sleeping around with 18 yr olds. Especially since she viewed them as conquests and got off on them going back to their boyfriends afterwards. Gross. Could not stand Brenda who's supposed to be Kate's friend but acts like such an overbearing know it all who won't sympathize with her. And the way they all treat Robin is horrible! Wish the author would have at least had them break up before having the MCs sleep together. If it weren't for Abby Craden I would have abandoned this book within the first few chapters
