It is a simple fact that no president in American history brought less foreign policy experience to the White House than Donald J. Trump. The real estate developer from Queens promised to bring his brash, zero-sum swagger to bear to cut through America's most complex national security issues, and he did. If the cost of his "America First" agenda was bulldozing the edifice of foreign alliances that had been carefully tended by every president from Truman to Obama, then so be it.

Story
No one is above the law. This belief is as American as freedom of speech and turkey on Thanksgiving - held sacred by Democrats and Republicans alike. But as celebrated Supreme Court lawyer and former Acting Solicitor General Neal Katyal argues in Impeach, if President Trump is not held accountable for repeatedly asking foreign powers to interfere in the 2020 presidential election, this could very well mark the end of our democracy. To quote President George Washington's Farewell Address: "Foreign influence is one of the most baneful foes of republican government."

Publisher's Summary
NUMBER ONE NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER
“I’ve read kind of all the books on this subject...and this is the one you want to read.” (Rachel Maddow)
Before Ukraine, before impeachment: This is the never-before-told inside story of the high-stakes, four-year-long investigation into Donald Trump’s Russia ties - culminating in the Steele dossier, and sparking the Mueller report - from the founders of political opposition research company Fusion GPS.
Fusion GPS was founded in 2010 by Glenn Simpson and Peter Fritsch, two former reporters at The Wall Street Journal who decided to abandon the struggling news business and use their reporting skills to conduct open-source investigations for businesses and law firms - and opposition research for political candidates. In the fall of 2015, they were hired to look into the finances of Donald Trump.
What began as a march through a mind-boggling trove of lawsuits, bankruptcies, and sketchy overseas projects soon took a darker turn: The deeper Fusion dug, the more it began to notice names that Simpson and Fritsch had come across during their days covering Russian corruption - and the clearer it became that the focus of Fusion’s research going forward would be Trump’s entanglements with Russia.
To help them make sense of what they were seeing, Simpson and Fritsch engaged the services of a former British intelligence agent and Russia expert named Christopher Steele. He would produce a series of memos - which collectively became known as the Steele dossier - that raised deeply alarming questions about the nature of Trump’s ties to a hostile foreign power. Those memos made their way to US intelligence agencies, and then to President Barack Obama and President-elect Trump. On January 10, 2017, the Steele dossier broke into public view, and the Trump-Russia story reached escape velocity. At the time, Fusion GPS was just a 10-person consulting firm tucked away above a Starbucks near Dupont Circle, but it would soon be thrust into the center of the biggest news story on the planet - a story that would lead to accusations of witch hunts, a relentless campaign of persecution by congressional Republicans, bizarre conspiracy theories, lawsuits by Russian oligarchs, and the Mueller report.
In Crime in Progress, Simpson and Fritsch tell their story for the first time - a tale of the high-stakes pursuit of one of the biggest, most important stories of our time - no matter the costs.

Interesting, detailed, well written and read !

Feel as if finally hearing the real whole entire backstory instead of often misleading, mismatched parts and the truth having been fogged over by the opposition. And so much new info. Really excellent, well written and narrated. (Though, PS to narrator, capital of Australia is pronounced CANberra, (actually CANbra) not CanBERRA. Everyone should read this so we can all be on the same factual page. It seems so far to have only gotten about ten seconds of airtime which is pretty tragic. Recommended.

Born during FDR's era, I have seen much. This book reads like a crime thriller; this page turner is true. Documenting moments in this administration hidden in dark niches, and before, will bring fact to those who are willing to hear. Thank you, Mr. Simpsom and Mr. Fritsch, for your courage and tenacity. I'm sorry you, and Mr. Steele, have suffered abuse from those who ignore our country's danger. I suggest they rewatch, "We Were Soldiers Once . . . and Young" if they want to refresh themselves on what a "Patriot" really is!

Comprehensive courageous and well sourced
This is the story of Fusion GPS and Christopher Steele’s months of meticulous and conscientious investigative work to bring together Fusion’s reports and Steele’s described Dossier that detailed not only Russia’s interference in the 2016 United States Presidential election, but illegal conduct by Trump and many of his advisors, legal, political, and professional. It is a well written, exciting, and illuminating account by Glenn Simpson and Peter Fritsch, senior partners of Fusion GPS, detailing how they came to be involved in the matter, the scope of their research, their retainer of Christopher Steele, his research and findings, and then the campaign by the Republican Party in Congress, Fox News and right-wing press, and President Trump to distort and denigrate their reports, even while through their work, passed on to the FBI and the DOJ was producing federal indictments, and then the Mueller Report that vindicated their work. This book brought clarity and conformation. Out of the tirade of noise Simpson and Fritsch have provided the distillation of well-sourced facts and confident analysis.

Regardless of how many steps you've taken into the Trump/Russia theater, this book paints a much clearer picture of the characters and events that have been muddied in public discourse by conspiracy theories. Whether they'll receive the recognition for it they deserve, Simpson, Fritsch & Steele are heroes for the work they did and risks they took in putting together the pieces that tell the story we now know.
