Story
Kay Willingham led a life as glamorous as it was public - she was a gorgeous Georgetown socialite, philanthropist, and the ex-wife of the vice president. So why was she parked in a Bentley convertible idling behind a DC private school, in the middle of the night, with the man who was the head of that school? Who shot them both, point blank, and why? The shocking double homicide is blazed across the internet, TV, newspapers - and across Alex Cross's mind. Kay had been his patient once. And maybe more.

Publisher's Summary
A killer with all the skills of a master detective has made Alex Cross the subject of his deranged "investigation".
In a Virginia penitentiary, Alex Cross and his partner, John Sampson, witness the execution of a killer they helped convict. Hours later, they are called to the scene of a copycat crime. A note signed "M" rests on the corpse. "You messed up big time, Dr. Cross."
Was an innocent man just put to death? Alex soon realizes he may have much to answer for, as "M" lures the detective out of the capital to the sites of multiple homicides, all marked with distressingly familiar details - details that conjure up decades-old cases. Details that conjure up Cross family secrets. Details that make clear that M is after a prize so dear that - were the killer to attain it - Alex's heart would no longer have reason to beat.

Not for me
I'm really not sure how Mr. Patterson has sold so many books. Has he never spoken to an actual person? Nobody talks like the characters in this book. Holy over dramatization Batman! John Sanford is 10 times the author. I'll never try another Patterson novel.

My last Alex Cross book. Juvenile writing. Terrible narration.
I have enjoyed most of the books in the Alex Cross series but this one was so far-fetched and absurd. Everything from Alex Cross’ behavior when certain events were going down to the behavior of the family members during times of crisis and the plot in general were just so far-fetched and unbelievable. I’m stretching it to give it three stars. The complete lack of attention to security that Alex and his wife display despite their family being in danger is just not believable. The narrator just isn’t good. It’s like he’s not even processing the actual words he is reading because he is so off with his inflection and mood. Conversations especially are not even believable the way they are narrated. It is painful to listen to him, but, the book is so bad, I don’t think even Scott Brick could save it. I’m sad to say this may be my last Alex Cross book to read. This doesn’t even seem like it was written by James Patterson. It seems like something someone wrote for him or that he turned out in a half distracted state over one weekend as a money grab to capitalize on his popularity and the popularity of the series. I will be asking for my credit back.

REPEATS ANOTHER BOOK BY SAME AUTHOR!
Mr. Patterson should not try to release two books at once. Ali Cross is a five-star. This one is more like a very similar book on the same subject, except Cross's son is kidnapped instead of his grandmother. Some of the scenes sound exactly like the other book - don't remember the title, but it was recent. I wouldn't bother with tis one - read Ali Cross instead., It's great.

Criss Cross
Better than my last Alex Cross book but of course no ending after hours and hours of grueling details of a mastermind killer🎉. I am ok with that if I choose to listen again to see if M is really worth chasing. Alex is not the most dynamic character in literary history, charismatic or funny😒. He isn’t charming or anything else so not sure why one would read further.
