Story
A knock on the door late in the evening can only mean trouble for Detective Josie Quinn, but fear chokes her at the news that one of her own team is missing. No one has seen Denton PD’s Press Liaison Amber for days and, as she follows the message scrawled on the frosted windscreen of Amber’s car to a nearby dam, Josie hears a piercing scream that tells her she’s too late. But the body they pull from the freezing water is not Amber....
Written by: Lisa Regan
Publisher's Summary
She wakes to the sound of footsteps outside her secluded home. Moving toward the window, she scans the dark woods around her and freezes. A tall figure in a long, dark coat holds a crossbow pointed right at her. She blinks as lightning cracks overhead. But when she opens her eyes, the figure has vanished....
When the body of a man is found in the dense forest surrounding Black Rock Falls, Sheriff Jenna Alton immediately sees disturbing similarities with a past case - the same murder weapon, the remote beauty spot, and the way the victim is perched against a tree with no sign of a struggle. But the killer in that case was jailed for life.
Jenna suspects a copycat killer, and her fears are confirmed when during the town’s Halloween festival, the bodies of two tourists are found further down the remote trail. They too had been hunted down and murdered in another picturesque spot, and all Jenna can hope is that the man behind bars can help her catch the twisted monster behind these new deaths.
As she comes face-to-face with the vicious murderer who has haunted her dreams for years, she is sure he knows more than he’s telling her. Looking deep into Jenna’s eyes, as if they’re two old friends catching up, he promises to take his final revenge on her for locking him up. But before she can learn more, he is dragged away by prison guards.
When a sudden emergency call takes Jenna and her deputy David Kane deep into the woods, Jenna senses something is very wrong about the situation. As a strange calmness falls over the forest, a familiar face emerges from the shadows. Will this killer be the one who finally takes down Sheriff Alton, and can they make it out of the forest alive?
If you love heart-racing crime books by authors like Lisa Regan, Melinda Leigh, and Kendra Elliot, you will love this exciting thriller from USA Today best-selling author D.K. Hood.

Is that ALL
I really enjoy the characters and story line the author provides; however, the character dialog is extremely annoying. It seems like every piece of dialog ends with "Is ALL". Maybe this is colloquial for the region but the fact is that every spoken word could end without the last 2 or 3 words of each sentence and it would make the book more enjoyable. The characters all have the same speech pattern, which takes away from each characters personality.
I only have one comment regarding the story line, it does not make logical sense that the Sherriff and Deputy (second in command) go absolutely everywhere together, leaving the Junior Deputies to fend for themselves. It makes the Sherriff look weak and incompetent.
The narrator is difficult to listen to, she makes every character sound like they are a 15 year old girl. I am not referring to her actual voice but rather the pace, tone, and inflection of her voice. On a positive note, her words are clear and crisp, easy to understand.

beware of the narrator
as with ALL stories from this series, I enjoyed the story. however, since ALL stories have this narrator, it really brings the overall enjoyment down. the narrator is sooooooo dramatic that I find myself mimicking her and laughing. if you've never listened to this narrator before, I strongly urge you to listen to the sample before purchasing.

Narrator????
I enjoy the Kane & Alton books but the narrator is too much. I wish she would calm down a bit - can't put my finger on it but this time she just grated on my nerves. I enjoyed the story but at one point it there is a situation and it is obvious what is going to happen but Kane and Alton don't think of it, they're too smart. Don't want to spoil the story. I would really like to hear this book with a different narrator.

I remember why I stopped listening to this series
With over 1800 books in my audible library, I’ve heard quite a few narrators and there are 4 that I will never ever listen to again.
The story, characters and plot lines of this book are fantastic.
I stopped listening to this series because of the narrator. Her tone for conversation between people in Montana is a cross between a jaw locked socialite and a valley girl. She gives every character this same inflection when speaking. She elongates one syllable words into syllables. I found it really annoying. As an example, it’s not weeeeellllllll-ah or hoooooome-ah. I know she can do it properly because when it’s straight narration and no conversation it’s mostly normal.
My advice is to read this series rather than listening.

The Series that just Keeps Getting Better
DK Hood writes an excellent "Who Dunnit" staffed with a great ensemble cast of characters. Alton and Lane become better and tighter each novel.
The mysteries are great, the setting beautiful, and slight touch of romance just enough to add a spark. This book and accompanying series rocks!

One half of this book is like listening to a previous book. Disappointing for a good series.
