Story
My name is Mercedes Athena Thompson Hauptman, and I am a car mechanic. And a coyote shape-shifter. And the mate of the Alpha of the Columbia Basin werewolf pack. Even so, none of that would have gotten me into trouble if, a few months ago, I hadn’t stood upon a bridge and taken responsibility for the safety of the citizens who live in our territory. It seemed like the thing to do at the time. It should have only involved hunting down killer goblins, zombie goats, and an occasional troll. Instead, our home was viewed as neutral ground.

Once again this is a book I've read before, but even so the performance of the narrator made it feel like new again. I was excited at the faster paced parts and the rousing rendition tugged my heartstrings. even the voices used for each character helped build them in my mind.
As for the plot, well Cry Wolf remains my overall favorite of the series. it's the novel where Anna and Charles really begin to flesh out in your mind's eyes, and it's easy to fall in love with the characters. It's easy to see why Patricia Briggs is a best seller.
Once again I got this with the intent of sharing it with my little brother, who is a little to visually impaired to easily read my paper copies. After listening I know he'll enjoy listening as much as I did my very first read through of the book. I'm glad to be able to share this magical series with him at last!

WOW!!
This was one of the few books I could not put down. I read a few of the reviews and thought I would give it a try. It was great. There was just enough suspense to keep you on the the edge of your seat and also keep you guessing as to what would happen next. I am a big fan of romance novels, especially those that have a great storyline. Some authors get too wrapped up in the sex aspect and forget to actually create a story. Ms.Brigggs did a wonderful job. I am definitely looking forward to reading the next story in this series.

Awesome read..
This series is set in the same world as Mercy Thompson's world. Samuel's brother Charles (Bran's enforcer)and Anna his newfound mate are sent out by Bran to track down a rouge werewolf in the woods and hopefully bond while they are out there. Holter Graham did a great job as the narrator, providing different voices for the characters. I HIGHLY recommend reading Patricia Briggs short story "Alpha and Omega" which you can find in the book "On the Prowl" which is the true beginning of the story,as cry wolf literally picks up right where the short story leaves off. Look for it as an ebook or check your local library. You also won't get a real understanding of Anna without reading it. It really does make Cry Wolf that much better of a read. Patricia Briggs scores again.

Brilliant! Even though it is my second go round.
I read this story the first time back in 2009. I realized that "Alpha and Omega: A Novella from On the Prowl" was a new adventure for the story. Listening to the new novella tempted me to start this series all over again. Sooooo, I am now doing the happy dance because this series makes me happy.
The H and H are strong and good. The adventures are amazing, the action scenes are exciting and the entire story is compelling! PB pulls you into a wonderful world. I am not reviewing the actually book as much as just expressing how pleasing it is to start this series over again. Well I guess it is kind of a review if you realize that I spent money to purchase the books and I am now willing to purchase the audible versions of those same books.
So I am posting this to all of the books in the series, because I will be listening to them for this Christmas season! :)
Yes. This series is worth all of your credits LOL

A little too much romance for me
Set in Montana, this book starts up right after the events in the prequel, Alpha and Omega. While it’s not necessary to have read the prequel story first, it does help explain several things about Anna Latham and her first impressions of Charles Cornick. This romance driven tale follows Anna and Charles on their quest to find a rogue werewolf in the wilds of Montana.
Charles is the son of Bran, the Marrock for North America. Bran leads all the werewolf packs and Charles is his right hand man for handling disputes among the packs, hunting down rogue werewolves, and sometimes carrying out executions. Anna just came out of the Chicago pack; having been terrorized by them for a few years, she is now learning what it’s like to be part of a caring and mostly stable pack in Montana. She’s an Omega, which means she isn’t compelled by the werewolf magic and hierarchy to follow the rules all the time. She can be a peacemaker and become the glue that holds a pack together.
On the surface, these both seem like interesting characters. For me, they were OK. Charles is Native American, but that part of his character feels a bit forced. Perhaps it will become more natural as the series progresses. Anna is so submissive and while I get she’s just come through the other side of some hellish years, I expected her to blossom a bit more in this tale. I don’t need her to become some badass archer. I just need her to feel like she can go have a pee without asking permission first.
Asil was the most interesting character for me. His past is a bit nebulous, but he looks Middle Eastern and had spent some quality time in Spain at some point. He’s still in mourning for his wife and adopted daughter after all these years and his mind may be slipping. Lots is going on with this character and I really wanted to know more about him. There was this other really interesting character, but they were eliminated, so I can’t name them without giving out a spoiler. I was bummed. I thought they added something to the story and Briggs could have done much more with that character in subsequent stories.
The ladies in this tale, for the most part, have no status unless the man in their lives has status. Such a turn off. A woman’s self-worth is not inherently tied to the men she’s related to nor the man in her bed. I’m OK with characters believing this, but I need the storyline to show why this isn’t the case, show me how women step outside of the system, or show me the shadow hierarchy among the ‘lesser’ members. That way, we have something interesting going on instead of a worn-thin trope.
Now the hunt for the rogue werewolf was fun. Anna had the chance to show off some of her camping skills, which was great. And who doesn’t like watching werewolves frolic in snowy forests? The mystery surrounding the rogue werewolf was two fold and I enjoyed watching Charles and Anna figure out what was truly going on. There were some chilling moments and I wasn’t sure everyone was going to make it out OK. This part of the tale was well done.
The sex scene was brief. It started off hot and we got just so far before all the truly interesting details were skipped over and the lovers are laying side by side, satisfied. Since this is paranormal romance, I could have used more here. It would have made up for the weaker points of the story.
The Narration: Holter Graham continues to be an excellent Charles and an excellent Bran (the Marrock). His female voices were OK, though sometimes I had trouble discerning one woman from another. I love his accent for Asil! He sounds so much like Puss in Boots, so I kept picturing Asil as a large orange cat.

Not really a romance
I’m not really sure how I feel about this book. If I were to be honest, I would have to say that I was disappointed with this book. I was wanting to listen to a shifter romance, not a dramatic tale. Based on this book, I don’t think I will continue the series. It’s not that the book isn’t well written, it is, it’s that it isn’t the kind of book I enjoy listening to. To me, it was more like a book I was assigned to read for English class,I can appreciate the writer’s talent, but it’s not what I want to read when I want to be entertained.

Listen to Mercy Thompson first!!!
This book really did nothing for me the first time I listened to it, and I still don't really think it stands alone very well. Since it's set in the same world as the Mercy Thompson series AND there is a preceding novella which I hadn't read, I didn't have any context for the characters. Anna seemed like a very stereotypical "survivor of abuse" character, which I didn't find very interesting, and if you don't know anything about Charles other than what's in this book, his strong-silent-stoicism isn't very interesting either. It seems like so many popular werewolf books are just an excuse to construct a world in which women are powerless victims who need to be rescued/redeemed by strong, virtuous men.
However, I gave this book another listen after I read the novella and listened to the first couple of Mercy Thompson books. After having more context for the characters and their actions, I did enjoy this book and the sequel a lot more. So I'd recommend these books for people in Mercy-withdrawal, but in my opinion they're not a good entry into Briggs's larger body of work.

Off to a good start, but.....
I really enjoyed the premise of this story. I also liked getting to know Charles and Bran better. I was very intrigued by these characters in the Mercy books.
However, I have a few points of contention. I found it got quite old listening to the constant mercurial inner dialogue from Anna. Yes, I understand she is a victim of sexual assault, I mean true brutality which is going to complicate her interpersonal relationships, but LITERALLY in a 5 minute period she extolled Charles's virtues, stated this man could never really love her because he was completely self-sufficient, and THEN stated how she could never live without his love...
C'MON MAN!
Her constant dissection of their relationship got pretty old pretty quick. One second they're having wild animalistic sex and then after it's over she won't even meet his eyes and thinks he doesn't love her. Knock it off already and just enjoy this man who loves you, treats you like a Queen, and truly sees you as his mate.
Ok, I'm off my soapbox. The narration was good, but I personally like the narrator for the Mercy stories better. I think she perfectly nails each character's "voice" and it really adds to the story.
I look forward to the next book and seeing how these characters evolve and learning more about this intriguing pack of wolves.

Start with novella Alpha and Omega
The novella Alpha and Omega was finally released in audio format and added to Audible on 2-12-13. As of now Audible has not added that story to this "Series listing". If you're just now beginning this series I cannot stress enough that you should listen or read the novella first. It was written and published before Cry Wolf and Chapter 1 takes off within hours of Alpha and Omega's ending. Some reviews as well as a few friends comments said they enjoyed the book but spent a lot of time playing catch up or feeling liked they were missing something vital. I got one friend to stop listening to Cry Wolf and read the short story Alpha and Omega first. She said that knowing Anna and Charles's background completely changed her viewpoint and made the book 100 times more cohesive and enjoyable.
Now to review Cry Wolf. This series is more romantic than Patricia Brigg's Mercy Thompson series but still has all the suspense, action and great plotting that fans of Ms. Briggs have come to expect. Charles and Anna are possibly my favorite "paranormal" couple. The wolf sides have already declared them mated. Now the human halves are left to and navigate through their insecurity with each other and how each person's violent and troubled past affects their reactions within the relationship. It also influences how they handle the events that confront them when they are sent out to find the rogue werewolf that is killing people and threating to expose the werewolves to the rest of the world.
Even though the Charles and Anna's romance is a major part of this book the few sex scenes in it are more of the PG13 variety. If you want a book with lots of explicit sex this isn't that book. If you're looking for a romantic storyline with lots of suspense and action that just happens to involve werewolves and evil witches spend your credit here. After you've gotten the novella first of course.

Crying for More from Patricia Briggs
I enjoyed reading this book. I enjoyed listening to it even more. I especially liked the voice he used for Charles.
I'm hoping that Audible will offer more books by this author soon!

Story doesn’t stand on its own
So I’ve got a couple issues with this audiobook.
First off, the story. The biggest issue I see is that this book doesn’t stand on it’s own. It’s supposedly the first installment of a series, but a lot of it doesn’t make much sense unless you’ve already read the author’s Mercy Thompson books, as well as the prequel novella. The novella, especially, really should have just been included as the first few chapters of this book - they’re really one story together, not two separate ones. It’s also really obvious that this is a spin-off series - much of what makes it interesting is the insight you get into characters that were intriguing from the Mercy Thompson books. That’s alright if you’re already a fan, but if you’re coming into this “Book 1” raw, the characters and storyline struggle to stand on their own. It just doesn’t draw me in the way I expect from a series opening novel. Really, I feel the whole series struggles from this issue - I keep reading because of the tidbits I learn about Mercy Thompson’s world, not because of any real investment in Anna or Charles, the main characters of their own series.
My other problem is the narration. It’s not necessarily bad - the narrator is competent enough. I’m mostly puzzled by the choice of a male narrator for a series that is primarily from the POV of a female character. It’s jarring for me to listen to the romantic feelings and sexual exploits of a female character in a man’s voice. Sure, the POV does sometimes switch to male characters throughout this series, but it’s definitely not the majority or even half of the time.
