Publisher's Summary

International business requires a deep level of industry insight but also a keen understanding of the cultural differences that impact how business is done. If you’re an American working in China or Japan for the first time, you may not realize the way each culture thinks and reasons is quite different from your own, which can lead to frequent misunderstandings.

You may be unaware, for example, that Americans reason in a linear manner, Chinese in a lateral manner, and Japanese intuitively. Or that Japanese view the world in literal terms, while Americans and Chinese are more balanced between abstract and literal.

You won’t see about these differences in a typical business etiquette book, but they are foundational to the way each culture considers and conducts their business.

In Culture Hacks, Richard Conrad draws on his 25 years of experience living and working in Asia to explain the different ways Americans, Chinese, and Japanese think, reason, and interpret the world. He’ll equip you to successfully navigate unfamiliar territory by offering best practices and recommendations for interacting with and understanding each other.

Candidate for Best Business Book of the Year

Fantastic! A must read for anyone, particularly Americans who do business in Asia. Personally, I have worked with Chinese people my whole adult life, becoming close friends and my spouse is Chinese; however, this book helped me gain so much more understanding of each culture’s orientation and thinking process. I would argue this as mandatory reading for any MBA student.

Special shout out to the presentation: the ease at which he went from English to Chinese to Japanese was amazing!

Excellent book to understand China and Japan

I learned a ton and really enjoyed the storytelling. A great way to learn about China and Japan but also the US through the contrast.

MUST READ !

Was especially impressed with the later half of the book and how after explaining baseline characteristics and cultural values of each country how he drew parallels and fully connected each point

In person experience and excellent summary

I lived in both China and US over 20 years and traveled multiple times each year between the two countries. I am amazed to see the misunderstanding between two sides from both business and political perspectives. In many cases, people are taking the exact opposite approach (by their own way of thinking) to address a particular issue going nowhere or making things worse. Richard's in depth observation and study brings a unique view to reevaluate how we operate and where we are heading to leverage strength and avoid mistakes. Highly recommend.

Fascinating and well-read

Really fun, insightful look into other cultures in an honest and non fussy sort of way. often funny, a business bent but not a business book...didn't realize how close and how far apart the different cultures were.
