Can Danny and his father outsmart the villainous Mr. Hazell?

Danny has a life any boy would love - his home is a gypsy caravan, he's the youngest master car mechanic around, and his best friend is his dad, who never runs out of wonderful stories to tell. But one night Danny discovers a shocking secret that his father has kept hidden for years. Soon Danny finds himself the mastermind behind the most incredible plot ever attempted against nasty Victor Hazell, a wealthy landowner with a bad attitude. Can they pull it off? If so, Danny will truly be the champion of the world.

What the critics say

“Roald Dahl sometimes shared a tonal kinship with Ogden Nash, and he could demonstrate a verbal inventiveness nearly Seussian...[His] stories work better in audio than in print.” (The New York Times)

loved it again as an Adult

Charming cute little story. Who thinks of these things?
So much love and enthusiasm in a little story. The narrator was brilliant. I'm usually quite cynical.

A classic, a favourite

Excellently narrated. This is one of my most treasured childhood stories... for years after, I would dream of life in a gypsy caravan

Wonderfully read, timeless story

My 5 year old son wouldn't stop listening, engaging story of adventure and a healthy father/son relationship. The reader has a very clear and mellow voice.

A book for all ages!

Every Roald Dahl book moves me each and every time I read them! This one is a treat, and should be required for all parents. So many take aways. Love.

Wonderful story read by a talented narrator

This story is a little different than other Dahl stories in that it’s just a series of events in a boy’s life with his father. I get the impression Dahl was modeling the father after a father figure in his own life, and it is nice to hear a man show true affection for his son. Too often British authors have children be after thoughts or they don’t have good relationships with their parents. This story is kind of the opposite of Peter Pan to me. It’s one of my new favorites, and I will be reading it to my grandchildren.

Peter Serofinowicz does a marvelous job reading. It’s like having someone read you a bed time story. He’s one of my new favorite narrators. Definitely in my top five.

Easily one of my favorites.

Unexpected plot. Wasn't over the top. Just right for me.

And great story for kids AND adults. Really relevant parenting for all time.

First book I liked with a male VO. Loved his voice and extremely talented doing different characters.

THE 2nd BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ!!!!!!!

I love how Danny and his Father have the perfect relationship and how his Father tells Danny great stories and how the stories he tells are about another book the author wrote.

Loved

I read this because there is a slight controversy in our family about the appropriateness of it as a read aloud for a 7 year old.

I feared several times that it was teaching poaching, deceit etc. However, by the end of each chapter it was clear that crime didn’t pay.

The narrator is spot on, one of the best. The book is exciting and the father/son bond is the best.

Poaching Pheasants

For a few nights I didn't get very far in the story as the narrator had such a gentle relaxing voice I always fell asleep. Finally one night I didn't. And to my surprise find the story is about poaching pheasants, and later drugging them with sleeping pills. I'm disgusted! What a waste of a great narrator's voice.
