Publisher's Summary

What drives the Man Without Fear? Matt Murdock was raised by a single father, an over-the-hill prizefighter with one last chance to make good - a chance that cost him his life. Taunted and tormented by other children, Matt's life was irrevocably altered after he was blinded by radioactive materials while saving the life of an old man. The payoff? An unbreakable will and a keen intelligence, helping focus the super-senses with which he was blessed during the accident. His story is one of love, pain, disappointment, and strength. In this brand-new adaptation, witness the strange machinations behind the life of one of Marvel's most beloved heroes.

Great Story.. Slightly Subpar Delivery

This interpretation of a Frank Miller/John Romita Jr. Graphic Novel is fantastic. Paul Crilley takes this surprisingly believable origin story and makes it accessible - describing Matt Murdoch's unnaturally-heightened senses beautifully, for example. He incorporates the gritty dialogue from the original comic book series into a gripping mob spectacle without many perceivable deficiencies. Crilley furthermore has a good feel for how much violence to include - providing entertainment suitable for adults but acceptable for minors, too (although scenes of murder and descriptions of bones breaking are often graphic - and accompanied by kinda gross sound effects).

The reading and full-cast performances in this story are commendable. Voice-acting is vivid and realistic, in particular. Furthermore, Richard Rohan's narration of the main text exhibits spot-on timbre, cadence, and tone.
Less fortunately, Marvel Audio overdo it with Sound Effects and Background music (they need to turn the volume down on footsteps, buzzing fluorescent lights, and street sounds. They also need to move music into the background instead of letting it overwhelm the performance).

Despite the intrusive sound editing, I thoroughly enjoyed this Marvel offering. Daredevil is an ethically conflicted character: unambiguously moral, but simultaneously a fury-driven vigilante. He is a fascinating hero with fascinating motivations.. well worth following.
If you have younger kids, 'Man Without Fear' may be a little intense.. but teenaged Marvel fans or adult comicbook geeks like me will love it. This 9 out of 10 star recording does the superhero/antihero justice.
