On the day she was abducted, Annie O’Sullivan, a 32-year-old Realtor, had three goals: sell a house, forget about a recent argument with her mother, and be on time for dinner with her ever-patient boyfriend. Story
Toni Murphy was eighteen when she and her boyfriend, Ryan, were wrongly convicted of the murder of her younger sister. Now she is thirty-four and back in her hometown, working every day to forge and adjust to a new life on the outside. She's doing everything in her power to avoid violating her parole and going back to prison. But nothing is making that easy – not Ryan, who is convinced he can figure out the truth; not her mother, who clearly doubts Toni's innocence; and certainly not the group of women who made Toni's life miserable in high school.

Story
In the lockdown ward of a psychiatric hospital, Dr. Nadine Lavoie is in her element. She has the tools to help people, and she has the desire: Healing broken families is what she lives for. But Nadine doesn’t want to look too closely at her own past because there are whole chunks of her life that are black holes. It takes all her willpower to tamp down her recurrent claustrophobia, and her daughter, Lisa, is a runaway who has been on the streets for seven years. When a distraught woman, Heather Simeon, is brought into the Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit after a suicide attempt, Nadine gently coaxes her story out of her - and learns of some troubling parallels to her own life.

Publisher's Summary
"Chevy Stevens is a brilliant and unique talent and Dark Roads is an instant classic. My hat’s off to her." (C. J. Box, number one New York Times best-selling author of Long Range)
The Cold Creek Highway stretches close to five hundred miles through British Columbia’s rugged wilderness to the west coast. Isolated and vast, it has become a prime hunting ground for predators. For decades, young women traveling the road have gone missing. Motorists and hitchhikers, those passing through or living in one of the small towns scattered along the region, have fallen prey time and again. And no killer or abductor who has stalked the highway has ever been brought to justice.
Hailey McBride calls Cold Creek home. Her father taught her to respect nature, how to live and survive off the land, and to never travel the highway alone. Now he’s gone, leaving her a teenage orphan in the care of her aunt whose police officer husband uses his badge as a means to bully and control Hailey. Overwhelmed by grief and forbidden to work, socialize, or date, Hailey vanishes into the mountainous terrain, hoping everyone will believe she’s left town. Rumors spread that she was taken by the highway killer - who’s claimed another victim over the summer.
One year later, Beth Chevalier arrives in Cold Creek, where her sister Amber lived - and where she was murdered. Estranged from her parents and seeking closure, Beth takes a waitressing job at the local diner, just as Amber did, desperate to understand what happened to her and why. But Beth’s search for answers puts a target on her back - and threatens to reveal the truth behind Hailey’s disappearance....
A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin's Press
"Dark Roads is a chilling, pulse-pounding thriller that also tugs at the heartstrings. It's everything you've come to love from a master of the psych thriller genre!" (Mary Kubica, New York Times bestselling author of The Other Mrs.)
"My favorite Chevy Stevens book since Still Missing. Stevens reliably creates complex, resilient female characters, and Hailey and Beth - whose lives collide in Dark Roads - are utterly compelling. The suspense builds with every page, and the ending is a complete shocker." (Sarah Pekkanen, number one New York Times best-selling Author of The Wife Between Us)

Absolutely captivating
From the very beginning of this novel I knew it was influenced by the highway of tears. Every woman in BC, indigenous or not knows and thinks about this unsolved case frequently. My mom made sure I didn't hitchhike as a teenager and this was edged into my brain as why. Chevy did a beautiful job of using 2 characters point of views to tell a heartbreaking and beautiful story of a fictional highway of tears. I loved that there were multiple readers who voiced the different narrations. Chevy always leaves me enthralled and ready for more and this novel was no different.

Gripping from the beginning of the Road
I was recommended to read ANY title by Chevy Stevens by a trusted, avid reader, so I jumped into Dark Roads, unaware this novel would stalk me...it was very hard to "put down" --found myself completely drawn into the heart thumping twists and turns of Dark Roads, all the while thinking I may know the killer and then bam, complete turn of events! HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book! Now the only question is, which Chevy Stevens do I read next?!

Hard to get into, but unable to put down after
I struggled to get into the novel at the beginning. It took so long to get into the intrigue and I didn't really know where it was going. After a few hours of periodic listening I got really into it though. The twist was really surprising but I do feel like it came out of nowhere. Good story overall and I'm interested to listen to more of her books.

Mediocre Writing/Inappropriate topic
Although the performances are good in this audio book, the writing itself and plot development was lacking. I also think the author, as lovely as her note was at the end of the story, shouldn’t take on a topic that is fresh and unresolved trauma within Indigenous communities where so many women have been murdered, have gone missing and are still missing. Chevy Stevens makes many references to the presence of First Nations people but at the end of the day, this is an open wound that someone is fictionalizing.

Absolutely OUTSTANDING!!!!
This is an OUTSTANDING book. It kept me captivated from beginning to end. I did not realize that it is actually based on a true story or toad depending on your perspective. The road is called the Highway of Tears. This is a real road that spans 450 miles in British Columbia. There are signs on this highway warning women not to hitchhike, there is a killer on the loose and at the bottom of the sign there are pictures of some of the victims.
The publisher’s summary gives an excellent overview of the protagonist’s situation. She’s a 17 year old girl who has lost both parents. Her aunt takes her in but the husband is a little hinky. When she finds nude pics of herself on his computer she knows she has to get out of there. With the husband being in law enforcement she doesn’t think she’ll be believed.
As the daughter of a survivalist she is prepared to live in the forest nearby. Right off the Highway of Tears she doesn’t think anyone will look for her.
Narration is flawless.
This book has my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

Masterpiece
This is a masterpiece. Chevy Stevens’ is a brilliant writer and this is her best book yet.
The narrator’s did an excellent job.
I cannot recommend this book enough. The only suggestion I have is that you don’t read the full description. Part of what is revealed in the second paragraph doesn’t happen until nearly halfway through the book. I’d rather have had that been unexpected.
Worth every credit.

I'm glad I did not give up!
I'm not going to lie, even though I am a big fan of this author, the first ten or so chapters had me wondering if I'd made the right decision selecting the new book. however, there was a pivotal moment when I realized I was hooked! If you have the time and the patience this book is worth it! But it is a little challenging in the beginning. The audio is extremely well done and enjoyable.

Boring--and refuses to end!
I guess that I'm just not the intended audience for this book. The storyline drags on and on and on, with a YA cast of one-dimensional characters. No real suspense for me--I stopped caring what happened before the half-way mark. Chevy Stevens has done so much better.

Everyone in Canada knows about the highway of tears in B.C. I hope Chevy opens the eyes of everyone who reads this book - and beyond.
Although a fictional story, Chevy draws us in with a relevant, timely and important message in her writing.

Disappointing
I will agree with others that the prologue was probably the best part of this book.
Separated into three parts, the first section was also good and interesting for the most part. My first grievance being that there really was no mystery… we only met one bad guy and one bad guy only that our main character kept pushing that he was bad.
Section two drug on with far too much detail of mundane things.
Section three also fell flat for me do to unrealistic twists and reveals that didn’t make sense
Once I got to the 5 hour mark, I decided to just finish this book. Finally finishing, I’m really not amused.
